The Iraqi state announced this week the opening of 7 mass graves near Saqlawiya in al-Anbar. The "Martyrs' Directorate" of al-Anbar province claimed the victims were killed by Saddam's regime (which buried hundreds of thousands of mostly Shia and Kurds in mass grave). However, evidence found inside the mass graves including a beer can with a design from 2010 & fabric on the corposes, indicate these graves are newer. In 2016, Iranian-backed Shia militias kidnapped 634 Sunni men and boys from Saqlawiya, marched them into the desert. These people have not been heard from since. As the militiamen marched the victims into the desert, they filmed themselves (see video) vowing to murder them to avenge a massacre ISIS had committed against Shia Iraqi Army soldiers back in 2014. The kidnapped men fled ISIS-held areas with their families. This episode demonstrates the influence of Iran-backed militias on re-writing Iraq's history to erase the grave human rights abuses they have perpetrated against Iraqis. By killing, intimidating & pursuing through courts, these militias have also silenced or drove into exile those daring to speak about their present-day crimes.
