There's a famous town in Somalia that's geopolitically claimed or fought over by some clans, so the city has classical local dialects and some marine related names. It's widely understood that people who forcefully want to prove that they're from the area try to imitate the local dialect and call themselves by marine names, like Abdi Lobster. We can see Jews trying to do everything to prove that they are from the Levant, and you are being used as a mouthpiece to sell it. Hummus not khumus is an Arab Shami delicacy.

In the town of Sderot, Israel, last week, friends took me out to lunch to sample the Israeli version of hummus and felafel. It was actually very good. The hummus was smoother, creamier and less tangy than the Lebanese variant. Fascinating how the Levant and the Middle East in general is so deeply connected by a common cuisine, yet so deeply divided by politics... On the question of who actually 'owns' hummus, I will leave that to the pundits. 😂

Have we ever wondered why only security agencies receive electronic devices? When we consider the cost of the equipment these three ministers received, it amounts to less than $10,000. whilst, collectively they oversee budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding your terms of reference (TOR) and the principles of statecraft can help grasp the importance of maintaining the status quo.

Setting boundaries is not really a Somali thing. Here, everyone’s business is community business. Privacy? Rare. Advice? Always flowing. It’s both a blessing and sometimes a headache.

With the kind of revisionist political sloganeering that minority extremists are unashamedly peddling these days, through glorifying a feudal emperor who oversaw one of the most devastating famines in recent human history, a sadist military butcher who had no compunction about summarily executing thousands of men and women (old and young) —not in a battlefield but in prison cells and offices —, and a vindictive and divisive rebel-turned-leader who led a heremetic clique that run a veritable ethnocracy committed to a sectarian idea of hegemony by one ethnic group, you wonder if their expressed “yearning” for national unity and pride, peace, democracy, human rights, good governance, isn’t some kind of a cruel joke! Clearly, the national schism is far more complicated than mere contemporary political divergence. There are no glorious past political days to look back to for inspiration or instruction. It is better to look forward, let bygones be bygones, and try to forge a different future through inclusive dialogue and peaceful politics. Nostalgia is not a cure for a country badly in need of deliverance from troubled political history.

The fermenting tension could easily spiral into a civil war—an all-too-familiar road that is far easier to slip into than to reverse. We must prioritize dialogue, understanding, and unity to protect Somalia’s fragile peace.

Poking at healing wounds risks undoing years of hard-earned trust. The progress we’ve achieved is at risk of being wasted. Resorting to violence while neglecting diplomatic and conciliatory efforts is not the solution.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 ‼️ Ignoring Somalia’s state fragility is both futile and dangerous. Starting a conflict that cannot be controlled is unwise. Addressing the situation with violence instead of reason is not only illogical but also counterproductive.
