Adding more variation to games is good for poker, but not when edge is so diminished and vague that poker becomes gambling.
Case in point: The Squid Game
The squid game, as an invention, was great for poker because:
1. It created lots of action
2. People sucked and there was clear edge
3. It opened up avenues that solvers malfunctioned for.
But it went too far when:
1. The size of the squid was made giant, forcing and rewarding shallow play
2. It was combined with high variance, low edge, obscure games like 6+ NL and PLO and high rake, making it extremely hard to know if you're winning without serious work and a lot of variance.
