Jackson was the lone dissent. “The First Amendment stands as a bulwark against any effort to prescribe an orthodoxy of views, reflecting a belief that each American enjoys an inalienable right to speak his mind and a faith in the free marketplace of ideas as the best means for finding truth,” the Court ruled. “Laws like Colorado’s, which suppress speech based on viewpoint, represent an egregious assault on both commitments.”

Imagine a bank with $1 billion in deposits. The customers believe their money is sitting safely in the bank, ready whenever they need it. But like most banks, only a small portion of that money is actually held in cash. The rest has been lent out – mortgages, car loans, business loans, credit cards. On paper, everything looks healthy. The bank shows billions in assets because people owe it money. Then one day a rumor spreads. Maybe someone posts online that the bank might be in trouble. Maybe a large investor quietly withdraws funds. Maybe depositors just get nervous. A few people decide to withdraw their money. The bank pays them. No problem. But the story spreads. More customers show up asking for their deposits. The bank still has some cash, but not nearly enough to cover everyone at once. Because most of the money has already been lent out. Soon lines start forming outside branches. Transfers spike online. Depositors rush to withdraw their funds before everyone else does. The bank’s balance sheet still says it has plenty of assets. But those assets are loans that will be repaid over years, not cash available today. And that’s the paradox of banking. A bank can be perfectly solvent on paper while still running out of money. If withdrawals continue, the bank eventually runs out of cash. That moment has a name. A bank run. And the only thing that can stop it is restoring confidence – because once people believe their money isn’t safe, the system that depends on trust begins to unravel.
