While male delivery workers are asking for better pay, let me remind you that women don’t even get the option of working as a delivery worker. Since there are only men working in these jobs, women feel uncomfortable working there as a minority because those men make them feel unsafe. No female delivery worker would work in an app where there are 2 women in a room full of 50 men. Women also feel unsafe going to deliver things because it puts them in another unsafe space - in homes of the male customers who threaten to molest them. Women are told by their families that they should wear traditional clothes like sarees and suits with chunnis both of which are seen as potential hazards when it comes to riding a bike. Data shows these are the reason for numerous accidents. Women are taught that riding a bike is manly and not feminine. They are discouraged from riding bikes. In a world where men are demanding better pay, women don’t even get the opportunity to have that job. And no one talks about this because no one cares. Only male problems are real problems. We only go on a strike when men are threatened by the idea of leaving their jobs. No one will go on strike to support female workers to get to have that job in the first place. No one will even notice their absence in these spaces.
