July 10, 1968. The Khe Sanh base had officially been abandoned the day before, but the killing was not finished. It ended on a scarred piece of high ground called Hill 689, just west of the old base. Marines were still holding 689 to cover the final withdrawal, and the North Vietnamese were determined to make them pay on the way out. An enemy ambush had left eight dead Marines lying in the open just outside the defensive wire. The NVA did not pull back from the bodies. They ringed the spot with bunkers, spider holes and machine guns and turned it into a kill zone, using their fallen enemies as bait. On the morning of July 10 a Marine platoon went out to bring their dead brothers home. The North Vietnamese were waiting exactly for that. As the Marines crawled toward the bodies, hidden guns opened up across the clearing, and men went down trying to drag out men who were already gone. The Marines refused to leave anyone behind, and it cost them. The mopping up around 689 killed another 11 Marines and 89 North Vietnamese before the last of them finally pulled off the hill on July 11. After 77 days of siege, a hundred thousand tons of bombs, and a base that was blown up and walked away from, this ugly little fight over a handful of bodies was how Khe Sanh actually ended.

One of the answers to the question of "where are the russian mechanized attacks" is they simply cannot accumulate near the LOC to go on one. Russia bombs UA controlled territory, but their own territory is stuff they AND Ukraine bombed. As advance slowed to a crawl, areas russians take over are destroyed, leaving very few places where they can hide armor to accumulate for assaults. And the more they advance the worse this got, since stuff captured in 2022-2024 was far more intact than what was captured since.
