There is a lot of Persian erasure when we talk about the etymology of words, and 'tariff' is a perfect example. Yes, the word is etymologically Arabic, but the sense we understand was a semantic shift brought about by Persians. To say 'tariff' is Arabic just because of 'ʿa-r-f' would mean that the Persian custom 'tarof' is also Arabic.
