Thoughts on recent GDM departures, and I suppose also a morale talk for colleagues on here -- The AI field and its broader participants like to mythologize our star researchers almost to the point of kayfabe. It's certainly fun to think of titan-scale people who are "10,000x" researchers and engineers and even in my short time at GDM, seeing only small pockets of the massive firehose here, I've certainly been blown away by some of the insights and strokes of excellent research execution that our very best -- Noam, Jumper, and others -- have done here. At the end of the day though, 99.9% of our field is moved forward by consistent increments stacked manyfold and performed by large numbers of humble, non-famous, but still excellent researchers collaborating in amenable environments for doing good work. This still describes GDM to a tee. It's the ineffable core mechanism of how scientific fields march forward and it's not something that has been lost for GDM at all. If we still want to put on the mythology-tinted glasses I think there are many star researchers being birthed and created in the current era, people who you may not have heard of but will definitely get their flowers in the future, and some of whom are my colleagues. I won't pretend that Noam + Jumper + other departures aren't a significant loss either -- especially Jumper who I personally view as a scientific hero. But the core essence of a research apparatus and the baby star researchers currently being molded are all still here and in the long term I am sure this kind of thing is a blip. Just gotta keep pushing!

@mottsmith I worry that without a total overhaul of California's approach to raising/allocating/spending revenue—which means at least a few ballot propositions—the next decade or two will be a procession of increasingly absurd, destructive measures like ULA and the wealth tax.
