I don’t really want to say this, but since Japan is often misunderstood, I’ll state it clearly. Every time I see Westerners disparaging Muslims, as a Japanese person, it only looks to me like Christians attacking Muslims. For the record, Christianity was not widely accepted in Japan until after World War II. From a Japanese perspective, if Christianity is so great, then why would a Christian country drop atomic bombs on Japan and carry out daily air raids, massacring Japanese civilians? Even centuries ago, Christians were involved in the slave trade, which led Hideyoshi Toyotomi to ban Christianity. The Japanese people take such history into account and are well aware of the history of religious conflicts, which shapes our perspective on these matters. Furthermore, Western right-wingers who seek to exclude Islam are being skillfully exploited by the Chinese Communist Party. For example, China has colonized what it calls the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The Chinese government deliberately labels Muslims as terrorists to justify sending them to concentration camps. As a result, a small number of Uyghurs who have managed to avoid being captured by China have reportedly ended up joining terrorist organizations out of desperation. On the other hand, many Japanese people, including myself, stand with the Uyghurs in protests against China. Japan is also home to many pro-Japanese international students from places like Indonesia and other regions. At the same time, in recent years, many Chinese who cannot compete in China’s domestic market—where mass killings and human rights oppression are rampant—have come to Japan, buying up property and enrolling in Japanese universities. For Japan, the more immediate issue is the silent invasion by China, which continues its military expansion. After taking control of Hong Kong in recent years, China is now setting its sights not only on Taiwan but also on the Senkaku Islands of Japan, sending vessels armed with cannons into the surrounding waters daily in an attempt to create a fait accompli. Japan’s situation is different from that of the West. As a Shinto nation, Japan has historically adopted assimilation policies, as symbolized by its acceptance of Buddhism upon its arrival. Assimilation is not easy; much is lost in the process. But we are merely human, not gods, so we cannot change everything. When we are discussing how to minimize risks amidst numerous pressing issues, it is unhelpful for outsiders to assume that Japan must be facing the same problems simply because their own country is struggling, or to try to drag Japan into their own issues as if we must share the same fate. That is neither what friends do nor something we appreciate—it is simply a nuisance. Japan is an independent nation. It has its own unique culture and history, distinct from those of the West. Our ancestors deliberately embraced Westernization centuries ago to survive in an era when Western powers were rising. But that does not mean we have become Westerners.
