Jeanette and I were honored to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra, India alongside @USAmbIndia. The Taj Mahal’s ancient architecture stands as a beautiful testament to Indian civilization and heritage.

My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." - Lincoln

@abefroman39 @wil_da_beast630 "In the beauty of the lillies Christ was born across the sea With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free As God is marching on" battle hymn of the republic.

@abefroman39 @wil_da_beast630 I understand the war was fought to stop the USA from splitting into 2 countries. It doesn't change white people's history of stopping slavery.

No. The Union did not initiate the Civil War in 1861 to free the slaves. Lincoln's stated goal was preserving the Union; he explicitly said so in his first inaugural address and in his 1862 letter to Horace Greeley: "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery." Southern states seceded primarily to protect slavery, as their own declarations of causes make clear (e.g., Mississippi called it "the greatest material interest of the world"; Confederate VP Alexander Stephens called it the "cornerstone" of the new government). Emancipation became a Union war measure only in 1863.

@abefroman39 @wil_da_beast630 and they were seceding because the North elected Lincoln and he was anti slavery. So sorry but yes the Civil War was about slavery and states rights to allow their residents to own them

@chrishume_ If I may: Southerners are less bothered by losing the war, than the attempts to retcon the entire conflict to "slavery vs freedom", demonizing everything Southern along the way. These are our ancestors, and our history. Our story isn't yours to deconstruct.

@chrishume_ Yes, being invaded by a foreign country and told to eat shit, then having that war completely reframed to make you look evil and the invaders as righteous, completely inverting history will do that to a people. The pile on of condescension for a 160 years only compounds it.

Is there a weird generational bitterness in the South about losing the war that I don’t know about?

A farmer dies in April 2026. His son inherits the farm. The farm has been in the family since 1847. The farm consists of: 300 acres of grazing pasture, a farmhouse built in 1892, a barn, a milking parlour, two tractors of varying ages, a Land Rover that runs about 70% of the time, and a herd of 180 Hereford-cross cattle. On paper, the farm is worth approximately £3.2 million. This is because land near him has been bought recently by a London hedge fund looking for carbon credits, which has dragged the comparable value of every field within forty miles upward to a number nobody local can justify. In cash, the farm produces a profit of about £28,000 a year in a good year. In a bad year it loses money. The son also works as a fencing contractor three days a week to keep the operation viable. The inheritance tax bill on a £3.2 million estate, even at the reduced 20% rate, comes to approximately £140,000 after the increased threshold is applied. The son does not have £140,000. The son has never had £140,000. The son has £4,200 in his current account and an overdraft. The son sells 60 acres to a developer to pay the tax. The developer puts solar panels on the 60 acres. The remaining herd cannot be sustained on the reduced land. The herd is sold. The barn becomes a holiday let. A different family eats Brazilian beef this Christmas without knowing why the price went up. The Treasury collects £140,000. The land never produces British food again.
