During his tenure, Gov. Mamo played a central role in the implementation of important economic reforms including floating the Ethiopian birr in July 2024, adopting a market-based interest-rate framework, opening the financial sector to foreign lenders, and launching the Ethiopian Securities Exchange in early 2025. These reforms were critical in getting support from the IMF and The World Bank. During his tenure, NBE floated the birr which now trades at about 138.5 per US dollar, compared with roughly 57 a year or so ago. The NBE held the interest rate at 15%, and opened the financial sector to foreign lenders after decades-long exclusion of foreign competition. I give special credit and recognition to Gov. Mamo for his swift shock and awe strike against the illegal forex trade as I noted in my August 12, 2025 tweet. x.com/AlMariam1/stat… The NBE has frozen hundreds of accounts suspected of involvement in the illegal forex trade. More forex crooks in the crosshairs of the NBE. When the forex crooks are hit in the pocketbook, they feel it. As of August 2025, the Ethiopian government has launched a significant $150 million foreign exchange auction to narrow the gap between the official exchange rate and the black market rate, marking a major intervention in its ongoing efforts to stabilize the currency. According to senior source on the Somali side: "the MOU is retracted". This means no naval base for Ethiopia, and no recognition for Somaliland. "Somalia never objected to commercial access... we never sought to deny Ethiopia commercial acccess to the sea."
