Independence is not a ZANUPF affair. It is ZANUPF that wanted us to believe that it is a ZANUPF affair. Independence is a national affair. People went to fight for the liberation of Zimbabwe not on a party ticket. They went to fight as Zimbabweans, not as ZANU or ZAPU cadres. ZANU and ZAPU were merely vehicles that were used to fight for the independence of the country. People did not sit down and carefully choose between ZAPU or ZANU or their military wings, ZANLA and ZIPRA, out of ideology or preference. In most cases, they joined the organisation that was geographically closest to them or most accessible at the time. The central principle of the liberation struggle was simple, to fight for the independence of our country. So what David Coltart and others who are not ZANUPF members have done today is what happens in any normal society. National events are attended by leaders and citizens across political divides. Mayors have always attended Independence and other national events, including non-partisan figures such as Muchadeyi Masunda and many others. The idea that someone attending an independence event must be part of some hidden political scheme is exactly the kind of thinking that perpetuates the false notion that Independence Day or Heroes Day are ZANUPF affairs. That thinking is wrong and must be challenged. We should disengage from this partisan mindset and assert our ownership of these national occasions. These events are funded by taxpayers, by the government, not by ZANUPF. They belong to all of us as Zimbabweans.
