Mostly rockets, the places they go to, or maybe don't. Space is big, and still quite empty. Also tech stuff that matters, eg. priv/acc, FOSS. ❤️ Debian.

My mind is totally blown this week! 🤯 It's the adventure I've been waiting for most of my life, and they are on the freaking way. So much great stuff has just been released by NASA just in this past 24 hours too.

Lots to catch up on here!

@ApoStructura The constraint in most places is reserve generating capacity not price. You're saying Scotland has excess generating capacity. So build to use it! More jobs, more industry, more of Scottish engineering ingenuity on the cutting edge of technology again!
English

@aeroroar That’s the problem! It is currently illegal to sell cheaper electricity in Scotland. If that were changed then Scotland would be a great place for industry in Europe.
English

The UK has massive offshore wind electricity capacity, mostly in Scotland, but not enough transmission lines to bring power down to the south where it’s needed.
So on windy days Scotland generates a lot more power than it needs, but can’t sell it south. You’d think that it would mean prices drop significantly in Scotland during these periods thanks to the over supply.
But no. The UK doesn’t allow regional pricing, so wind turbines have to be turned off!
Instead of using the spare capacity to lower prices in Scotland they just turn them off…
And it gets even dumber than that: the wind turbine owners have to get compensated, meaning they are being paid to offset the lost revenue, so everyone pays for electricity that is not being generated.
It’s completely kafkaesque.

Mixing it up on the @offnom podcast yesterday. Nothing too controversial, unless you consider rating each aspect of NASA's new Ignition program for leadership, quality & feasibility controversial. Episode 234 - FREEDOM! (with Lori Garver) youtube.com/live/Tv8GbeyiQ… via @YouTube

The past is a great predictor of the future.
When we look back, some of the greatest technical advancements of our time are based on a simple change in the availability of key raw materials.
Take for example, the Washington Monument; it's capped with aluminum. Not because it looked cool or was in some way a utilitarian choice, but because in 1884, aluminum was more precious than gold.
