The government of #Ethiopia today declared the end of its first-ever outbreak of Marburg virus disease. @WHO recognizes the measures taken by the @FMoHealth and the Government of Ethiopia. The outbreak was contained in less than three months through a response led by the government and supported by WHO and other partners. WHO activated its emergency response within 24 hours of the outbreak, deploying 36 experts and redirecting 28 additional staff to support field operations. Our collaboration enabled the rapid expansion of diagnostic capacity, strengthened patient care and supported effective outbreak control at the frontline. afro.who.int/countries/ethi…

Through sustained and tireless efforts to prevent and control Marburg virus disease, and in accordance with the standards set by the World Health Organization, no new cases have been recorded for 42 consecutive days. As a result, we have successfully contained and controlled Marburg virus disease and decisively mitigated the associated risk. On today’s occasion, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the Honorable Mr. Tagesse Chafo for delivering the opening remarks at the Marburg virus disease response recognition, review, and appreciation forum. I also express my gratitude to all leaders and participants who honored our invitation and took part in this important program. Our health professionals, healthcare workers, and leaders across the health sector served tirelessly; day and night; under extremely challenging conditions, often placing their own lives at risk in the line of duty. On behalf of myself and the Ministry of Health, I extend my deepest appreciation to all professionals, leaders, and stakeholders for their exceptional dedication and commitment. In particular, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of our health professionals, staff members, and community members who lost their lives in the course of protecting and safeguarding our communities from Marburg virus disease.
