Everyone’s response is dealing with a fly ball beyond first or third that hasn’t touched fair territory yet. For THAT, the bottom of the ball has to hit the actual line. On the ball in question it already touched in fair territory and is inside the bases, so as long as any part of the ball is over the line, it’s fair. Also here is the thing with me…I know the rules and I generally don’t jump in unless I know the rule. I cited the @CloseCallSports video of an identical play with the Yankees that explained why this is a fair ball. While my expertise is in scoring, part of that is knowing the rules in and out. In my other life and real job (in sports) part of what makes me good there and I have the rule books for many sports very well memorized. Both umpires saw that a part of the ball was over the line, and they were adamant on it.

The problem with the MLB Rule Book is they don’t always write the rules the way laws or contracts are written, where anything in a paragraph is dependent on the initial subject or subtopic of the paragraph. In short, does that definition in the last sentence only apply to fly balls or all fair balls? MLB puts multiple points about the same subject in a paragraph that aren’t dependent on a paragraph’s subtopic, especially in the DEFINITIONS section. Which leaves the last sentence below open to interpretation: When the rule says “When in contact with the ground…” is that sentence dependent on the subject - FAIR BALL - or the subtopic - a fair fly ball, which isn’t capitalized to show it’s a standalone definition. While MLB doesn’t have to directly address if the umpire called the fair/foul correctly, they should clarify if the last sentence only applies to fair fly balls, or all fair balls.
