It seems pretty reasonable to me that the dense urbanism that extends from Boston to Miami should be connected by high-speed rail, as in Japan.

@levelsio The nature of building a business to support a “free lifestyle” is that you invite competition from people willing to sacrifice their time to collect your market share.

I think it's as unimaginable in the mind of someone who has thousands of people on payroll why you "wouldn't" just hire a second person As it it unimaginable to me why you "would" I personally love my life without managing people, without calls and meetings, without interpersonal drama, team retreats, company conferences, having to fly everywhere to meet people, and I still make a lot of money I think it's really a blindspot of status quo "we've always hired so why not?" On reverse you could of course say me operating solo forever is a blind spot too. Could I make much more money hiring people? Maybe yes but then I'd lose my very chill and very free life I have now that's worth more to me than money

Exciting news, we just launched a new division: water restoration and mitigation. It's a natural extension of our plumbing and sewer business. When customers deal with floods, burst pipes, or water damage, we now have an in-house team to handle demolition, dry-out, and cleanup. No more referring out. We built a 10-person team from the ground up, fully equipped and ready to scale. If we execute, we're looking at a $5M opportunity. Busy weeks ahead, but this is exactly how you grow.

@girdley @RomeenSheth It would only work for a very small percentage of people. Would be an HR nightmare for the rest

Been busy lately so here's some life updates: 🗽 Moved from ATL to NYC 3 weeks ago ✅ Acquired a home service SaaS, rebuilding and having convos with industry professionals 🤖 Finally giving Claude Code / vibe coding a try after seeing design capabilities 🏃‍♂️ Recovering from tears in my ankle from last half marathon, hope to be running again soon 💼 Still enjoying my full-time job. If you can make it work, keep it!

My acquisition of Buddy’s Plumbing Excellence (Copley, OH) is complete. Great company, great team, bright future. With this in mind, now's a great time to share how we're using Big Reputation to put Buddy's Google Business Profile into overdrive. Follow along.

Seems like the AI scare is due to SaaS companies underestimating how durable their "moats" really were Serve as many customers as possible and dilute the "one thing" you were great at Then AI arrives and eats up the mediocrely-executed parts and your biz shrinks

Here's how you get "MRR" - Find ONE customer - Get THEM to pay you twice a month - Give them services for 40+ hours a week, Monday through Friday, and BOOM - Cash in YOUR pocket, after tax.

The underrated thing about keeping a business alive is that conviction compounds Each year you grow and develop a better understanding of the mechanics. You can talk about it convincingly because you know what works. And it makes the selling of the product much clearer

Most small businesses have ways to improve their revenue quality/predictability, and it's not simply by lock clients into long-term contracts. Other options: 1) Offer incremental value at zero/low gross margins (i.e. pricing additional services/products very close to cost). Allows you to improve retention and perception of value for your core offering. 2) Tracking when clients will next need your service or product, so you can remind them. Improves odds of repeat revenue. 3) Remove friction around ordering. Make it easier for clients to place orders, to pay you, to re-order, etc. 4) Create referral incentives for clients to get a referral network flywheel spinning.
