Mt.Kenya 2 Routes (Old Moses-Lenana-Chogoria Gate-Lenana-Old Moses) 70Km Slide 1. First Summit of the Day from Old Moses Slide 2. The beautiful Sunrise Slide 3. Second Summit of the day from Chogoria Gate Slide 4: A moment with the super incredible @Limo_kipkemoi a few meters to the summit The first time I heard about the 3 routes challenge, it made me wonder why anyone would put themselves through such an ordeal! A day dash is already brutal, but now 3? Damn! But over the time, I found myself tempted to attempt 2 routes, especially because I normally finish my day dash so early and then have to wait for hours for the others to finish. The D day finally came and on Friday, we left Nairobi for Old Moses, where we spent the night, so as to start our hike at 3am. Unfortunately, I couldn’t sleep, yet sleep is such an important part of being physically and mentally prepared. I even tried counting to 100, but it didn’t work! I This meant suffering throughout the hike and I really battled with it, and it’s one of the reasons why I decided to end my challenge at 2 routes! At 3am, it was all systems go… the adrenaline and energy levels were high, and to my pleasure, the trail was pretty much dry! I was worried about getting my shoes wet at the bogs and climbing in freezing toes was not appealing. The thing I should have been prepared for is the rocky path from the Likii junction to the river… I fell about 3 times, hurt myself… I mean, you are running in the dark… The first summit felt supper good. I was up there in a record 3hrs 27mins. Took a photo, and started hiking down towards Mintos. I was expecting to find the guide with my supplies at Mintos but unfortunately, he wasn’t there. This meant I had no food and electrolytes to keep me going. I had to rawdog on water all the way to Chogoria gate and back to Mintos. The hike down towards Chogoria was really good and easy, but coming back up was torturous. Luckily, I had saved a lot of time going down (6 hours from old Moses), but it took forever to get back to the summit… about 6 hours (to be continued)
