An effective way you could reduce gerrymandering is that for metros >1.5M people at least 80% of the population in that urban area has to be in districts that are contained entirely within that metro. For example, DFW has only has 30.5% of its population in DFW only districts!

@MappingFL Exactly, in terms of gerrymandering Rs are almost at their ceiling, Ds have basically just started (Maryland, Colorado, Minnesota, NY, NJ, WA can be easily gerrymandered, even California can be much more extreme)

Btw I wannabe clear. I know the democrats can counter the Republican maps in the south I’m not worried about partisanship. I’m a true believer in racial protections in red and blue states. So I’m looking at this through a racial justice lens. Not a partisan lens.

So we all agree the Callais ruling is bad. But we don’t agree on how bad. But we all agree it’s not the worst possible outcome Time will tell Btw I’ll block anyone celebrating the ruling. So if you want to follow me keep that in mind.

@RedistrictNet @MappingFL I believe that new orleans and memphis seats might be safe for now. Plus, its hard to further gerrymander atlanta. I would at least expect Alabama and Louisiana to go back to their 6-1 and 5-1 maps. Not sure abt MS and SC

While the court did not strike down Sect. 2, it appears have have drastically reduced it’s usefulness by changing the standards to prove violations of the Gingles prongs, making it far more difficult (must control for partisanship)
SCOTUSblog@SCOTUSblog

The 2nd opinion is in Louisiana v. Callais, on race-based discrimination and the Voting Rights Act. A 6-3 court held that Louisiana's map creating a 2nd majority-black district was "an unconstitutional racial gerrymander." Court didn't strike Section 2. supremecourt.gov/opinions/25pdf…

@JohnCranney @Nate_Cohn @secretsandlaws To be fair, NH, Maine, RI, and Montana have some of the “fairest” maps. And there’s no way you can create even competitive districts in Idaho or Hawaii

@Nate_Cohn @secretsandlaws Here’s a question, if a State only has 2 seats should they both go to the majority party or 1 to majority and 1 to minority or 1 to majority and the other approx 50-50. Currently those states all give both to the majority, whether R or D.

I'm going to break my self-imposed social media ban to note something that I might write if I wasn't leaving on a trip tonight: If you want to solve gerrymandering, it is a solvable problem.

Four Democratic House members have died in office since Jan 2025. David Scott, 80. Gerry Connolly, 75. Raúl Grijalva, 77. Sylvester Turner, 70. We have to stop electing people this old. This is not okay. What are we doing.
