Updated Himawari-9 observations of the ash and SO2 from the #Sheveluch (#Shiveluch) eruption. Animation goes from 13 UTC on 10 April to 23:50 UTC on 12 April. Some aspects of the SO2 transport remind me of #Raikoke

Using @simoncarn SO2 estimate + 17km plume height (Himawari satellite), volc2clim.bgs.ac.uk predicts a minor aerosol optical depth increase confined to northern hemisphere for #Sheveluch, with peak cooling of -0.002 K. @BGSvolcanology @volcanofile @volcan01010 @andyprata

Looks like a big eruption from #Sheveluch occurred overnight (local time). Plume becomes identifiable around 13 UTC on 10 April. Some clear ash and SO2 signals in Himawari-9 AHI data.

#Sentinel5P #TROPOMI data for the #MaunaLoa #eruption showing ~0.2 Tg SO₂ on Nov 28. SO₂ furthest east is at higher altitude than the plume nearer the #volcano. For reference, we estimate that the 1984 Mauna Loa eruption emitted ~1.2 Tg SO₂. @CopernicusEU @BIRA_IASB @ESA_EO

Latest #MaunaLoa observation from #TROPOMI at 23:42 UTC shows a nice SO2 plume. Quicklook image from the #SACS system.
