@chamath or we use technology to our advantage. We at conifer.io are building rare-earth free motors that have the same power density with completely localized supply chain

Some ideas of the critical industries for the US.
The All-In Podcast@theallinpod

Chamath explains four key industries that the US needs to onshore: 1) The AI Supply Chain 🧠 2) Energy ⚡️ 3) Critical Minerals and Rare Earths ⛏️ 4) Pharma APIs 💊 On E223, @ezraklein asked @chamath what success would look like for Trump's tariff / onshoring agenda: Chamath: "There is a major issue that the United States has that's much bigger than China." "We are not in a position to take care of what we need." "We depend on folks whose view of the United States can change in real time." Ezra: "Give me what indices you are going to look for." Chamath: "We need to measure and protect four critical areas." 1) The Entire AI Supply Chain 🧠 "Number one is all of the technology, both the chips, as well as the enabling technology around artificial intelligence." "It must be a robust, largely American supply chain." 2) Energy ⚡️ "Number two is energy." "We do not have the capability we need to make the energy we need quickly." "In many ways, we have critical supply chains that can be shut off by China around photovoltaics." 3) Critical Minerals and Rare Earths ⛏️ "Number three... there are critical material inputs that drive the material science of the future." "So we have a critical minerals and rare earths and material science input problem." 4) Pharma APIs 💊 "And then the fourth, Ezra, are pharma APIs." "So that when American citizens get sick, we have the ability to not just make it, but also design it and manufacture it."

@esaagar That's why we have solved the same power/torque density in motors, without rare-earth. conifer.io

I knew it was coming but its still bad: China has officially halted shipments of several rare earth minerals to the US specifically used as inputs for cars, semiconductors, and aerospace companies US co's have basically zero stockpiles because of balance sheet concerns

@elonmusk @unusual_whales Refining is a toxic and high effort to reproduce process. What if you could have the same Torque density in motors without rare-earth? that's the problem we have solved for under 30hp (conifer.io)

Important to note that what matters is the ability to refine rare earth elements (which are NOT actually meaningfully rare) and manufacture magnets for use in electric motors. People understandably tend to think that rare earth mineral deposits are what’s scarce, given the name. That is false. They’re everywhere. As with lithium, what China has that others lack is the heavy industry of refining the minerals.

China has suspended exports of certain rare earth minerals and magnets to the US and around the world. China is drafting a new regulatory approach to the minerals to prevent them reaching American companies

The difference between a good and a bad company is the number of quarters your employees will give you when things go bad. Range: 1-3

@ChanReed_ Great summary thread. Would be better if there were more numbers and ranges, like the SDE number. Even better with an example!

Interview with @LumberyardDamon dropped today 👉 Acquiring Minds in your podcast player. Damon had 3 criteria for his search: 1) B2B 2) remote 3) scalable He found all 3 in an insulation supplier. (Love these criteria myself.) 3 fav takeaways from my convo with Damon 👇

I'd be lying if I said I haven't at least considered the path of becoming a LMM intermediary/business broker after the last 9 months of searching for SMB to acquire. The opportunity seems strong imo. My thoughts below -please challenge this and call out why I'm wrong:
