@captgouda24 How about bringing back the pre-modern tradition of putting animals on trial when they commit crimes?

The death penalty, should we have it, should apply to everyone, even the stupid. It is no more a reason for mercy than someone only committing a murder because they have a bad temper — it is simply who they are.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court, on a 5-4 vote, lets stand lower court decisions tossing out Joseph Clifton Smith's death sentence in Alabama because the court found he is intellectually disabled. SCOTUS dismissed the case as improvidently granted — meaning the decision below stands.

ABC News has now taken all FiveThirtyEight articles completely offline. They now redirect to abcnews dot com/politics. A needless erasure of thousands of pages of knowledge.

@SavnRyansPrvate @jbarro @earlyvotedata Definitely might be something weird with the rules? 20% seems low… I have been generally thinking about this at 40-60 for D seat but it’s not totally clear to me. Would love to hear from some UT politics people

Decent chance we are looking at 9 pro-GOP redraws and 1 pro-Dem redraw between 2024 and 2026. 🔴 Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, Louisiana, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Missouri, South Carolina vs. 🔵 California Gain of ~9 GOP seats from redraws in a neutral environment.

For those who keep thinking "crossover" voters exists in CA Primary elections... here you go. In the latest polling just 1% of Reps say they will vote for the most mod Dem in the race, @MattMahanSJ. Funny enough, 3% say they will vote for the one saying he is the most progressive in the race, @TomSteyer So, when someone says that a Dem can win by appealing to crossover voters, show them this. And the same goes for anyone thinking a Rep can win by getting crossover votes. (I would like to see Insurance Commissioner... that may be more prone to crossover votes this year)

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

No idea why this early 20th century historian's photo is as a teenager, but it definitely fits his modern alt-right vibe.

in a professional context, trying to get clarification about who reports to whom wrt a sub-project. my body locks up & refuses to type the simple question. it remembers my past lives in warlords' courts where I literally died after explicitly asking questions about the hierarchy

@deanwball If empirical evidence showed that a society organized around deontological principles created better outcomes than the alternatives, utilitarians would happily sign on.

I decided to delete the pictured tweet, which was an over-stated, half-thought follow-up to the quoted tweet. I stand by the view that there are dangers of rationalism, and especially of “rationalism in politics,” but it is worth being precise about such things, and this wasn’t.

I am aware that I follow some rationalist discourse norms (typically adverbs and adjectives used to describe my epistemics), but I have never been a rationalist in the contemporary internet sense, and my favorite philosopher’s most famous work is a biting critique of rationalism.

@KelseyTuoc @sarcasticSyzygy @goblinodds I feel like Hoover deserves as much blame for the Great Depression as Marcus Aurelius does for the Antonine Plague. Intelligent, humble, selfless leaders who didn't have access to a scientific theory that would work.

@sarcasticSyzygy @goblinodds And arguably there was no meaningful option for him to just, like, implement extremely well-executed modern monetary policy, and his heuristics didn't perform worse than other heuristics except electorally

I know it's boring and repetitive to talk about how grossly evil Trump is, but the fact remains: Trump is grossly evil, in a way that's pretty much unprecedented in this country.

"China Derangement Syndome"—I often meet people who seem to really believe that if China "wins" the AI race (in whatever sense) that they will topple the US government and create some kind of Chinese global empire I don't get it—in reality China isn't an aggressive nation at all

There will always be people misunderstood and unfairly feared by society, and I'm glad most Americans want to protect the rights of people even if they don't like them.

Color me shocked that the Very Online Candidate with no experience and no real campaign strategy beyond "get likes on the internet" ended up losing a Democratic primary to the incumbent mayor of Evanston, Illinois.
