For those interested- @DrJackKruse has been pretty blatant about its benefits. Just ordered and have them coming every 3 weeks. Hopefully reputable enough, planning to “cut” it with Crystal Geyser and aim for 90ppm for the family. I’ll take any insights and give feedback on em 🤙🏻

“Skiing, I have come to believe, is the emperor’s new clothes of leisure pursuits: a collectively sustained fantasy. People insist it’s magical in the same way they insist that cold-water swimming is “transformative” or small plates are “better for sharing”. At some point we forgot to ask whether any of this is actually true.” (I do not endorse this message)

Wow! This is a benchmark blizzard if this holds for the Northeast. Of note, New Jersey is in line for some nutty snow totals. Coastal flooding a big concern at high tide. The 3km-NAM only goes out through 12z Monday and has feet of snow already in places of NJ and Long Island. 50-70 MPH gusts on the coasts easily. I think NJ is a sweet spot for some major major snow totals. 20"+ seems pretty attainable on the Jersey Shore and just east of Philadelphia.

@NESpower @NESpower Why don’t you contract crews for storm response like every US utility? There’s probably 10,000 contract linemen deployed across the SE states right now…..you’re leading the outage count in a storm you’ve known about since Monday and have less than 300 lineworkers?????

I buy HVAC companies the same way people buy houses: Find a good one, get a loan, and make payments from the income it produces. Except HVAC companies pay better than rental properties. And I don’t have to deal with tenants calling me at midnight. Instead, I have to deal with: Customer calls/texts complaints starting at 6am and ending around 11pm GC project manager threatens to call the cops on you Employee crashes van into a gas pump Van breaks down on the interstate first thing in the morning and is out of commission for 4 days Installers install the wrong equipment at the right house Installers install the right equipment at the wrong house Technician no call, no show on a random day where he’s scheduled with 5 calls 3 non-revenue call backs for the same $250 service call Missing payroll by a day because of a new bank holiday in the middle of the week Employee quits via text message after 4 days on the job Suppliers not having one critical part in stock even though their website states 15 available

We’re gambling with $700k. Not intentionally, but one of our main services has a nearly 5-week backlog of work totaling almost $700k. Some might think this is a good problem to have, but it’s not. Backlogs are bad for effective operations. On the surface they can make you feel safe but violate one of the principles of running a good operation. Effective home service operating requires balancing supply and demand and the sweet-spot is same-day or next-day install. This sweet spot lets you charge a premium price and make customers happy. This particular service (trenchless pipe lining) is CAPEX intensive and our team has been crushing sales which is why we have this huge backlog. We’re making moves to get through this as fast as possible but it’s not an ideal place to be.

I have been professionally humbled more in the last 6 months than I think I have my whole career. As I watch the 4th truck to be sold this year pull out of my yard, it’s a bit of a kick to the throat. I know I’m doing the right thing, I know downsizing and adjusting to work load is the answer, but my pride is taking one for the team. The name of the game for me at the moment is to SURVIVE. Keep my head above water. It’s reality. I’d like to say it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, but I am. I’m trying to be humble enough though to be transparent though

One thing nobody tells you about laundromats: You deal with endless random vandalism. Door handles, toilet seats, sharpie graffiti - nothing is safe. You'll get good at fixing it. But it never really stops. This passerby decided our landscaped wall needed a remodel...

@therobertbrooks But what do you average, excluding materials, revenue per payroll man hour? Direct, not every man hour. And total payroll, not just billable.

“$800 an hour for AC repair?” That’s what a customer figured after a 2.5 hr job. Here’s the truth: You’re not just paying for the time in your living room. You’re paying for techs who are background-checked, drug-free, and paid well enough to stick around. You’re paying for payroll taxes, PTO, health insurance, office staff to answer when you call, $100k a year in truck insurance, fuel, tools, training —the whole operation that makes sure we actually show up when you need us. If a part fails twice and we go back three times, you don’t pay extra—we eat it. Yes, we make a profit on some jobs. That’s what keeps the doors open and lets us take care of our people, so we’ll be here when the next call comes in. You’re not paying for 2.5 hours of labor. You’re paying for reliability, accountability, and peace of mind.

@apprentice_inv @BobcatCompany Dealer doesn’t do loaners for Warranty service, which means guaranteed loss of revenue during downtime. Just impossible to run ASV for any serious company. Great machines but they’re made for your chuck in a truck types of operators

Might be time to give up on @BobcatCompany . When our machine was in the shop, we had them replace the drive belt. First job out today, the drive belt fails. Machine’s now stranded on the customer’s property and completely immobile. We called it in and were told the earliest a tech could come out is next Tuesday. That’s a full week of a machine just sitting, dead in the water. Totally unacceptable and not a good sign of reliability. They charged us for a new belt and pulley, which we’ll now be installing ourselves tomorrow. And they tried to spin it like maybe we did something wrong. We didn’t. At the exact same time, our other machine starts spewing hydraulic fluid from the arm. No obvious cause. Our 2025 has been in the shop 5 times already. The 2019? Even more. I’d understand this stuff if we were slamming these things into trees or neglecting maintenance, but that’s not what’s happening. These are just mechanical issues that keep stacking up. All this is happening while we’re right at the finish line on buying a new T86. Honestly? I’m second guessing it. The guys in service and sales have been great, no complaints there, but the reliability just hasn’t been. We need a third machine, and we need it yesterday. Starting to look hard at the Takeuchi TL12 now. We’ll see what happens.
