Only two men signed all four of America’s great founding documents: • The Continental Association (1774) • The Declaration of Independence (1776) • The Articles of Confederation (1777) • The U.S. Constitution (1787) Those men were Roger Sherman and Robert Morris.

@HistoryCalendar Robert Morris was a wealthy man who essentially lost everything to finance the Country. A guy our current President would likely term a loser. Makes you wonder how far we have regressed.

I am an admirer of Robert Morris - he was a hugely influential and important player in the financing of the Revolution whom history has all but ignored. Sadly his circumstances deteriorated in the late 1790’s and he ended up in debtors prison till the Bankruptcy Act freed him in 1801. He then lived out the rest of his life in humble circumstances in Philadelphia and died in 1806.

Union and Confederate veterans shake hands during the 50th anniversary reunion at Gettysburg, 1913. Fifty years after the Battle of Gettysburg, thousands of aging Civil War veterans returned to the Pennsylvania battlefield where they had once fought as young soldiers. The 1913 Gettysburg Reunion commemorated the battle’s semicentennial and became one of the largest gatherings of Civil War veterans ever held. Men who had once faced one another across stone walls, ridges, and open fields reunited as survivors of the conflict that had transformed the United States. Veterans were housed in a sprawling temporary camp near the battlefield, and many were now in their seventies or eighties. They revisited landmarks such as Cemetery Ridge, Little Round Top, and the site of Pickett’s Charge, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting had taken place in July 1863. One of the reunion’s defining moments came during a ceremonial reenactment of Pickett’s Charge, when surviving Confederate veterans crossed the field and were greeted by Union veterans with handshakes instead of gunfire. More than 50,000 veterans attended the event, and the widely photographed gestures of reconciliation became enduring symbols of national reunion, even as many of the war’s underlying issues and legacies remained unresolved.

In 1324, Mansa Musa I, ruler of the Mali Empire in West Africa, set out on a pilgrimage to Mecca that became one of the most legendary displays of wealth in recorded human history.... Contemporary Arab chroniclers, who witnessed his procession passing through Cairo, described a caravan that reportedly included as many as 60,000 people, including soldiers, officials, scholars, and personal slaves, along with somewhere between 80-100 camels each carrying roughly 300 pounds of gold. Some accounts mention additional retinues of musicians and griots — West African oral historians and praise singers — performing throughout the journey. The Mali Empire at the time controlled access to some of the richest goldfields in the medieval world, located in the regions of Bambuk and Bure in West Africa, which supplied a significant portion of the gold circulating throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and even parts of medieval Europe. When Mansa Musa arrived in Cairo, he reportedly spent and gave away gold so lavishly — to officials, scholars, the poor, and as gifts throughout the city — that he caused a documented economic crisis. The sudden flood of gold into Cairo's market caused its value to crash dramatically, leading to significant inflation that took, according to most historical accounts, somewhere between ten and twelve years to fully stabilize. Some modern historians and economists, examining medieval Arabic financial records, consider this one of history's earliest documented examples of an individual single-handedly disrupting a regional economy through sheer spending power — centuries before modern economic theory even had language to describe such an event. Mansa Musa's empire, often underrepresented in popular history compared to contemporaneous European and Middle Eastern powers, was by most economic measures one of the wealthiest states in the entire medieval world, controlling trade routes and resources that connected West Africa to the broader Mediterranean and Islamic economic systems. #archaeohistories

BREAKING: "MORE PEOPLE WILL DIE" — Sotomayor delivers FURIOUS bench dissent after Supreme Court legalizes Trump’s immigration crackdown. In a single devastating day, the Supreme Court's conservative majority handed Donald Trump TWO sweeping immigration victories — and Justice Sonia Sotomayor delivered a furious dissent warning of the human cost. First, the 6-3 court stripped Temporary Protected Status from 350,000 Haitians and 6,100 Syrians — clearing a path to deport hundreds of thousands of people back to countries devastated by war and disaster. The same protections are now in jeopardy for a dozen other nations. Justice Elena Kagan's dissent quoted Trump's own vile words about Haitians, writing that his statements "fairly SHOUT, in their racial undertones and overtones alike, that race entered into the president's resolve to remove Haitians from this country." This is the man who falsely claimed Haitians were eating people's pets and called Haiti a "filthy, dirty, disgusting" country. The court somehow decided that wasn't racial hostility, akin to declaring that water isn’t wet. Then came the second blow. The court ruled Trump can physically turn away asylum seekers at the border — blocking them from setting foot on U.S. soil where the law would let them claim protection. The conservative majority absurdly decided that migrants standing AT the border haven't "arrived" until they fully cross. Justice Sotomayor was so outraged she read her dissent ALOUD from the bench — a move reserved for the most profound disagreements — visibly catching Justice Alito off guard. "The consequences of today's decision are predictable," Sotomayor declared. "MORE PEOPLE WILL DIE. More people will attempt to cross the border illegally, and some will make it while others will not." She demolished the majority's tortured logic, comparing it to a train conductor announcing the train is "arriving at Penn Station" while it's still half a mile away. "It makes no sense," she said. She's right. Many asylum seekers face torture and death in their home countries — and sending them back is a cruel rejection of their plights. Then, there are the doctors, engineers, students, and caregivers who were given shelter under earlier administrations and built lives here legally under their Temporary Protected Status. Now they face deportation to nations where, their lawyers say, they too could be KILLED. This is what a Supreme Court captured by right-wing ideologues delivers: legal cover for cruelty, dressed up as statutory interpretation, while a solitary justice with compassion warns of the human consequences. Innocent people will die. And the court can’t say it wasn’t warned. Please like and share if you think the Supreme Court needs urgent reform to counteract the right-wing bias currently built into its majority!
