“I was not very good in high school. I did all kinds of other things. You could say I was a bit of a rebel. But if you're not a rebel, you aren't questioning anything. If you have a curious mind and a rebellious character, you can be a good researcher even if your grades are not so good. I am the living proof of that!”
At today's Nobel Prize Teacher Summit, chemistry laureate Morten Meldal spoke about the advantages of being a rebellious researcher.
Meldal was awarded the 2022 chemistry prize for the development of click chemistry.

“Timing is very important. You need to pick hard problems to solve and be ambitious with them. But you've also got to pick the right time when the world and the context that you're in is the right kind of environment for those ideas to flourish.”
In his official Nobel Prize interview, Demis Hassabis discussed how his aspirations as a young gaming programmer were ahead of their time.

Frances Arnold received the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the directed evolution of enzymes. Her work has led to more environmentally friendly manufacturing of chemical substances, such as pharmaceuticals, and the production of renewable fuels.
Evolution – the adaption of species to different environments – has created an enormous diversity of life. Arnold used the same principles – genetic change and selection – to develop proteins that solve humankind’s chemical problems.
With one ingenious idea and years of subsequent work, she turned bioengineering upside down.
In 1993, she conducted the first directed evolution of enzymes, which are proteins that catalyse chemical reactions. The uses of her results include more environmentally friendly manufacturing of chemical substances, such as pharmaceuticals, and the production of renewable fuels.
