Brian on why pure people managers won't survive AI: "I don't think people that only manage people will have any value in the future. Everyone's going to have to be a hybrid people manager or manager IC. In other words, even the managers need to code. You can't just be these managers where you're people's therapists and you're just doing meetings, just one-on-ones. People who have lots of recurring one-on-ones are not going to survive. That kind of leadership style is not gonna work. You need to have context. I hear about heads of design, they don't actually manage the design. Johnny Ive manages the design. He designs and he leads people. A design leader who only manages the people that's crazy to me. The way Frank Lloyd managed his design team is through the work. You don't manage the people, you manage the work. I think a lot of people will survive this age of AI. The two types of people that will not survive are pure people managers, and people that are rigid and don't want to change and evolve."

My guest today is Brian Chesky (@bchesky), founder and CEO of Airbnb and one of the great consumer founders of the last 20 years. Paul Graham coined "founder mode" based on Brian's experience running Airbnb. This conversation is about what comes after it, what he calls AI founder mode, and how it will force founders to focus even more on the details. We talk about his eleven-star exercise for finding product market fit, why your first hire should be a recruiter, and why Airbnb's $100B IPO became one of the saddest days of his life. Brian still comes across like the 17 year-old at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) who picked to study industrial design. His heroes are all artists. Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Walt Disney, and Steve Jobs, all of whom were working the week they died because they loved what they did. Rick Rubin taught him that an artist is only an artist when they make things for themselves. Now Brian believes AI is the opportunity for all of us to do the same. Enjoy! Christian Braun takes full accountability for the Nuggets’ first-round exit “I just think I’m the leader of this team. I’m the vocal leader of this team. And when we don’t play well as a whole, you can blame whatever you want … You can blame anything. But I didn’t play well enough as an individual, and I didn’t have this team ready enough to play in a tough series. So we’ll be better. I’ll be better. I’m looking forward to next year, when we can respond.” (Via @BennettDurando )

Tough day for folks (DM me if I can help!) but if I found myself suddenly laid off from a company that cited AI as a cause, this is what I’d do: - download codex and Claude/code - say: “this was my job and how I spent my day, how can you help me automate it w skills” - push a dozen of those skills to GitHub - open up Claude design and make a portfolio site, with an “agent” per skill explaining how you built it, what tools it interacts with, etc.” give to lovable or v0 or whatever to publish - post that site and link to GitHub on LinkedIn - search “ai for ” and try all the new startups, form an opinion, message their founders - try something scary like openclaw, form an opinion - take a course in tactical AI in your field - build, share, build The gap in AI adoption is getting bigger. Start reskilling now while it’s early. The time is now.

Hard to believe the Nuggets season ends in April. Kudos to the TWolves. Remarkable effort and execution in this series. They’re just better. Jaden McDaniels talked it and walked it. Devastating playoff performance for Denver.

For 50 years, software engineering ran on code rationing. Writing code was expensive, so we rationed it carefully through roadmaps, RFCs, prioritization meetings, and scope reviews. This created a role: the No Engineer. No, that won't scale. No, we don't have bandwidth. No, that's out of scope. No, we need a design doc first. The No Engineer was valuable for 50 years. Every "no" saved real money. Their judgment was the rationing system. LLMs will be the end of code rationing. Code is cheap now. And while the No Engineer is explaining why something can't be done, the Yes Engineer has already shipped three versions of it. If you're a Yes Engineer, the next decade is yours.

Ok so: message = text instructions agent =LLM w tools, connectors + sometimes a computer that takes in messages and does things including sending messages back local agent = that computer is on your desk cloud agent = that computer is on the internet sandbox = that computer is in a real or virtual box for the mutual safety of you and your agent subagent = your agent gives some work to another agent tool = a way to get a specific input/output from AI hooks = things that trigger off specific events in your agent’s life connector = a way to get info from AI to/from a 3p system MCP = a standard for connectors skills = set instructions and code for an agent to use over and over again api = a way for software to talk to other software via code cli = a way to trigger code (incl APIs) in the terminal which is easier than having your agent try to click buttons plugin = bundle of skills + connectors harness = opinionated and bundled set of instructions, tools, etc so an agent can make maximal use of its model and computer to do a good job, usually coding agent SDK = a way to programmatically invoke a harness what did I miss and also what is wrong with us

i hit my biggest career win and immediately got a quiet kind of depressed about a year later. nobody warns you about that (i know, boo hoo). you spend years climbing the mountain and the view from the top is.. just the same. the climb itself was the best part

@askcalebleigh I understand this one. When I hit a career-high, the crash was instantaneous. The journey really is the best part! (It’s something I’ve equally struggled with, that is seemingly hard to properly explain).
