A young SpaceX employee asked Elon what happens if they fail to reach Mars in his lifetime. The room was full of engineers and the question landed heavier than anyone expected. It was a simple question but it cut to the core of everything SpaceX exists for. The entire company, every late night, every exploded prototype, every engineer who missed their kid's birthday for a launch window, it all points at Mars. What if it doesn't happen in time? Elon paused. He said that the goal was never for him personally to walk on Mars. The goal was to build the infrastructure that makes it inevitable. That even if he dies before the first crew lands, the system he built would carry the mission forward without him. He said the rockets, the factories, the team, the culture, all of it is designed to outlast any single person. Including him. Especially him. Then he said something that reportedly moved people in the room. He said that if he thought success depended on him being alive, he would have already failed. The whole point is building something that doesn't need its founder to keep going. He compared it to a cathedral. The architects of medieval cathedrals knew they would die before the building was finished. They designed it anyway. They poured their life into something they would never see completed because the completion wasn't the point. The commitment was. SpaceX is his cathedral. He may never set foot on Mars. But the road between here and there will exist because he refused to accept that nobody was building it. The most ambitious man alive has already made peace with the possibility that his greatest achievement might happen after he's gone. That's not failure. That's faith in something bigger than yourself.

There are a few new pieces of info from @Tesla in the last 24 hours that I think are worth highlighting: 1) Tesla ended last quarter with the highest Q1 order backlog in over two years. 2) Tesla now has 456,000 active monthly FSD subscribers, generating over $45M/month in revenue. 3) Tesla's fleet is now driving an average of 28.8 million miles per day on FSD, up 100% from just 3 months ago. 4) Tesla is increasing Model Y production at Giga Berlin by 20% starting in July, and hiring 1,000 new employees. 5) Tesla has entered into an agreement to acquire an AI hardware company for up to $2B, of which ~$1.8B is subject to certain service conditions and/or performance milestones dependent on the successful deployment of the company's tech. Tesla didn't say in its 10-Q filing which company this is. 6) Tesla is going to nearly double its GPU training capacity in Q2 2026. 7) The Cybercab will not be subject to the annual 2,500 autonomous vehicle cap. 8) FSD V15 will work on AI4

I wrestled with this book more than any other I read this year. Its core argument is to abandon growth as a goal. The doughnut invites us to live within limits, and I respect that deeply. But it revealed a core value to me: growth and innovation are essential to who we are. Growth is one of humanity’s most powerful tools for solving problems and unlocking what is possible. If sustainability were our only goal, we would have stayed hunters and gatherers. I am grateful we did not, because innovation has created so much beauty. It sent us to the moon, enabled us to fly, and deepened our understanding of the universe. For those who fear the unknown, the greater risk is doing nothing. A species that stops exploring will meet the same fate as the dinosaurs. Humanity’s gift is not restraint. It is creation. If that is true, our ecological ceiling cannot be fixed. We can raise it through innovation and the right incentives: developing sustainable energy, capturing carbon at scale, and exploring beyond our planet. The doughnut’s moral insight remains right: meet everyone’s needs and protect the living world. But our destiny is larger. We are here to expand what life can be and to do it responsibly.

The doughnut models an economy that meets everyone’s needs without breaking the planet. The inner ring is the social foundation of food, health, education, and equality. The outer ring is the ecological ceiling of climate, oceans, and biodiversity. The space between them is the safe and just space for humanity. The seven ways to think like a 21st-century economist invite us to see the economy as embedded in society and nature, to design for balance and regeneration, and to pursue growth with intention rather than addiction.

I read Doughnut Economics earlier this year and I appreciate how deeply it made me think about my own values. I love the principle but disagree with a permanent ceiling on growth. Growth is how we create beauty and how we survive. 🧵

Omg I didn't understand what it means to "remove a browsing profile" on Chrome. I thought it signs you out on Chrome app, but it destroyed all my open tabs and logged me out of everything 🤦‍♂️. My ~200 open tabs just... gone. Taking the opportunity to switch to Brave browser again.

We need better thunderbolt networking, Apple machine learning support, and then general support for training on Apple Silicon. Clustered Mac Studios could provide a reasonable alternative to NVIDIA in the future. 🚀
