ARC review sites. Book Siren, Net Galley, etc.... Who here has experience, positive or negative? I've never tried them. Pre-2015, getting reviews was easy, then I shifted to a direct sales strategy where reviews barely mattered. Is the return worth the investment?

@TheAuthStephTom Cormac McCarthy, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf are examples of classic writers who have either omitted quotation marks or futzed around with thr standard rules. It's not the end of the world if pulled off nicely.

I can’t stop thinking about a post I saw earlier. I’m unable to find it now but the gist is that she’s having a hard time reading novels with no “speech marks.” I can only assume she means quotations.
Have I missed something here? When did it become acceptable in the English language to laze out and exclude the simplest of grammatical requirements? How does someone write and even publish a book believing that’s okay?
More importantly: why?
