As an immigrant from the midwest to the coast I'm still getting used to seeing celebrities and politicians in-person. In the midwest we are socialized that these are people from the screen and you don't see them. But famous people just hang out on the streets in NY/LA/DC

I've said it before and I'll say it again: No European City has a skyline. London's skyline is competitive with mid tier American cities at best and it is the peak on that continent. The skyscraper is an American art form and it only reaches its truest heights here.

Name one American city with as much beauty or aura as these European ones? Even NYC’s skyscrapers have competition in London now. We need to build more beautiful cities + taller buildings. Why does Dubai outdo us in height? Why does Paris outdo us in apartments? Why does Rome outdo us in monuments?

“Trust the science” is genuinely one of the dumbest slogans of all time. The entire point of science is to NOT trust it. It’s not an authority. It’s quite literally meant to be questioned continuously, forever. The replacement of rebellious/disagreeable personalities in science (the only people who can actually create new paradigms) with consensus-seeking ideological cogs is the real tragedy
Simon Maechling@simonmaechling

The collapse of trust in science is going to go down in history as one of the most sad, bizarre, and destructive social contagions of modern times. We fed billions, cured diseases and powered nations - yet people ran toward conspiracies instead.

I strongly disagree that women should lower their standards for emotional connection, but I guess it depends how you define emotional connection. I’ve never read a romance novel but when it comes to Disney love, the princes are not remarkable communicators or anything. They simply have deep love, that infatuation, that NRE, that customized idealization and attachment. And they show it outwardly once in a while. IRL men can feel this and do this. I believe women need to lower their standards too. But it is because this feeling of amazing love, this feeling that your partner is wonderful, is supposed to propagate from inside both of you, not happen because the guy is already perfect. Women shouldn’t hold out for a partner who is perfect on paper. We all should (if we want Disney love) be able to crystallize a well-suited partner into a beautiful wonder. I don’t think women should lower their standards on receiving Disney love back. That’s one of the only ways I think women should NOT lower their standards. They should instead have patience and work on making the Disney love more possible. You can look at stuff on “Positive Illusion” in partners if you want a jumping off point to modern research. And there is some philosophy of romantic love written by men. Men have felt Disney love across history too.

Women have been the equivalent of pornbrained by romance novels and Disney and are expecting male partners that cater to the female fantasy of idealized emotional connection. These men mostly do not exist, men are different and imperfect and imo women should drop standards

Alyssa Liu went viral during the Met Gala for her rant on the state of the public perception of data centers. "We are being manipulated into ceding the compute frontier. Data center development is vital to national security." She adds, "Karen Hao's overstimation of data center water consumption by a factor of 1000 has done irreparable damage to the nation's efforts to stay ahead."

It wasn't like that pre dot-com bubble, hardly. What you're seeing is a lot of second and third homes of those who won the internet. I'm not sure how the recreational revolution ("I like to travel" people) fits in, but that's also part of it.
