@CharlotteA15906 @RachelMoiselle Not as woke as you might think, but certainly the reviews talk about the books and even the 70s series as problematic and having racist tropes.

@RachelMoiselle I'm getting tired of reading reviews of the new "Little House" consisting of apologies by the reviewer for parts of the books that don't seem woke enough. It's enough to make me dread the new series, which will undoubtedly be ultra-woke.

What I find interesting in this piece is that the author makes a moral argument against the politics of Little House on the Prairie while simultaneously admitting she felt a sadistic level of ‘justice’ in a character going blind because she is pretty.

This CSU forecast for 50 ACE, if it verifies, would be the quietest Atlantic season since 2013. I can't say I disagree with how strong the El Niño is, and how it's already dominating the global circulation.
Philip Klotzbach@philklotzbach

CSU reduces forecast for 2026 Atlantic #hurricane season and now calls for well below-normal activity: 9 named storms, 4 hurricanes & 1 major hurricane. High likelihood of strong #ElNino and associated increase in vertical wind shear the primary factor: tropical.colostate.edu/Forecast/2026-…

@RyanWeather Wouldn't be surprised to see this fall below 97. We at least were up to D in mid July with a couple of hurricanes. Not happening this year most likely.

@unusual_whales Is this because of remote work or because Millennials are more egalitarian? I think some of both.

@BigJoeBastardi To be fair, part of this is that NYC is a far safer place than in 1977 and better infrastructure. But yeah, this was not unprecedented at all.

It's one small slice of America's 250th. We shouldn't turn away from it, but neither should we act like it's the defining element. fwiw, I would have been terrified to be trapped on a train with all these assholes (even as a white woman). I wish we could bury white supremacists in history - but we've never managed to do that as a country. But presenting it as representative? Nah. That ain't it. These jokers are a tiny slice of us.

@burgwx Why is Newark always warmer than Central Park in the summer? Some marine influence in the park or that it is at least to a small extent surrounded by trees?

@seckhardt I remember it...it was like a 10 or 11 day heat wave in NYC. The numbers were insane and they haven't been repeated since. Same year of the big heat wave in Chicago that killed hundreds.

Disappointingly low job growth - especially in the May and April downward revisions where we thought the labor market was humming. But this is good news for the interest rate crowd - the Fed loses some ammunition to raise rates with hiring this slow…

I’m not kosher because 1) unlike Hinduism, pigs aren’t holy. Most of the rules are like about cleanliness/food safety, and I think we’ve developed better rules 2) the dairy and meat provision seem fake. The literal text obviously only bans cooking an animal in its mother’s milk

The end of the fires was ultimately when they cancelled the state health insurance plan for the Bronx in 1981, almost 10 years after the bulk of the damage was done

My hot take is that the main fault of the Bronx fires is bad insurance law The state should have simply not keep offering low fire insurance rates in an area where 80% of the housing stock has burned down in 10 years
