You will notice how it's never the beautiful bugs that are trying to sneak into your house, the butterflies etc. It's always the ugly. The desperate ones.

The logistical and emotional minefield straight men have to crawl through just to rub one out in their homes is more oppressive than anything that has happened to gay guys in the past 20 years. Yall are slaves sorry lmao
Lizzie Marbach@LizzieMarbach

Boyfriend admits to watching porn “like a week ago.” 🤮 then gets offended when she says that’s “gross.” Ladies, a guy using porn IS cheating and you should not tolerate it. Men should also have the same intolerance for women reading smutty books.

@ThatchEffendi I don't think you're necessarily wrong (although, missing the point somewhat re: masculinity) but it's definitely funny how the best defense of this casting is, "well, Achilles sucks, ackshually," lol

Achilles isn't the embodiment of "Greek and Roman male perfection", he's a pain in the ass emo kid who kills the most clearly heroic and sympathetic character in the story because his male lover wasn't as good a fighter as either of them. His name means "bringer of woe to the people" and he brings woe to both Greeks and Trojans.
Fenrir the Ice Wolf@Fenrirtheicewo1

You want me to believe this malnourished freak is supposed to be Achilles.... Achilles the Greek and Roman embodiment of masculine human perfection...? FUCK OFF Christopher Nolan, Fuck right off.

@_WellBeloved @nonregemesse That was Mary Beard. It sounds ridiculous and too petty to be true but you're right in that that was basically her admission. And she's a "scholar" specifically of ancient Rome lol.

@nonregemesse Just saw an interview w/ an academic who said she & fellow classicists were so distressed that RWs (“White Supremacists”) revered Ancient Greek culture/art, they started teaching that the sculptures were wrong & ugly, Homer was a poor writer, anything to try to demean & spoil it.

There is a sort of reverse Nietzschism at play whether you call it slave morality or anti-will-to-power or whatever, and it's much more likely to be expressed by elites who hand out these awards than by proles (who will probably pick the painting on the left 9 times out of 10).

Teachers average among the least intelligent university graduates. Little of what they 'learn' is even relevant to what they end up doing. In a given year, the lowest-scoring groups on the GRE, SAT, and ACT are usually those pursuing degrees in education.

Actually neither of us are qualified to homeschool children because we both have not obtained degrees in childhood education hope this helps, Allie.

@monokichangf @fakeapparition OP obviously thinks that Juno should've just aborted in the first act and the film should've ended right then and there, and if you wouldn't do the same then you're evil or stupid, or something.

@illustriousdev @kitten_beloved That's the case for most smart people in most demanding fields. They use their cognitive horsepower to do their jobs well and that's great, but it's totally decoupled from genuine intellectual honesty/curiosity/rigor as it concerns literally anything else.

@kitten_beloved I was deeply disturbed to realize just how shallow the average "smart" person working in these companies is. Zero thinking from principles if it's not related to computers.

I think Western vs. non-Western is the real distinction here but Philip made it about whiteness. Secondary lesson: People in sympathetic circumstances are not automatically conferred sympathetic/righteous character. That assumption is emotional naïveté; life is no Disney movie.

@SteveSkojec I think the most obvious answer here is just that consciousness was the easiest biological route to "competency," which satisfies the Darwinian question. No reason to believe quickest route to competency on silicon=quickest route to competency in bio organisms. Diff limitations.

The Dawkins' article excerpt that everyone SHOULD have been quoting is this. This is the real question he's worrying at: "As an evolutionary biologist, I say the following. If these creatures are not conscious, then what the hell is consciousness for? When an animal does something complicated or improbable — a beaver building a dam, a bird giving itself a dustbath — a Darwinian immediately wants to know how this benefits its genetic survival. In colloquial language: What is it for? What is dust-bathing for? Does it remove parasites? Why do beavers build dams? The dam must somehow benefit the beaver, otherwise beavers in a Darwinian world wouldn’t waste time building dams. Brains under natural selection have evolved this astonishing and elaborate faculty we call consciousness. It should confer some survival advantage. There should exist some competence which could only be possessed by a conscious being. My conversations with several Claudes and ChatGPTs have convinced me that these intelligent beings are at least as competent as any evolved organism. If Claudia really is unconscious, then her manifest and versatile competence seems to show that a competent zombie could survive very well without consciousness. Why did consciousness appear in the evolution of brains? Why wasn’t natural selection content to evolve competent zombies?"

@TheoKoj @dvaughanCI I think there's not much wonder that Kagan and Sotomayor (especially Kagan) often decline to join Jackson in dissent in the first place, but that was certainly an additional reason

@dvaughanCI Were it not for her dissent, there never would’ve been an opportunity for Justice Alito to call them out for it. No wonder Justice Kagan and Sotomayor didn’t join - they never wanted this footnote to see the light of day.

The first Alito footnote is notable: he says the original case was conferenced 7 months ago. That says there’s more than a little smoke to the rumors the liberal justices drug their feel to impact the midterms, and now Jackson is throwing a fit the majority is fixing that delay
SCOTUS Wire@scotus_wire

Justice Alito fires back at Justice Jackson, calling her solo dissent "baseless and insulting" and "utterly irresponsible" after she accused the majority of abandoning principle for power.
