For decades, New Yorkers have been subject to unrelenting, enormous costs, noise, pollution, danger, injuries and deaths imported daily by suburban drivers. The Congestion relief charge of $9 does not begin to cover these externalities, but it at least a disincentivizes them.

@Boenau I once was putting up visibility flagging around some tech equipment in an industrial yard. The wise site manager told me it wasn't enough for it to be visible; it had to look like it would damage their truck if they ran over it.

Cities used to be filled with tight knit communities in neighborhoods where everyone knew each other. Kids played outside and roamed around and no one cared. Then mass suburbanization happened in the 60s/70s. American cities became high crime places. Everyone became anonymous. No one knew their neighbor Serial killers could get away with murdering random people and no one would know or care. Over and over. You could get away with it. Then in the 90s/00s forensics, cameras, then dna matching got better and serial killers had a risk of being caught by the police. So it stopped.

Boggles my mind that we have a public policy problem where a huge part of the solution is "let capitalists make a shitload of money" and we refuse to do that because like 500 people with masters degrees have a religious belief that markets can never serve poor people's interests.

@YIMBYDemsSD Can you provide one reference or example where market rate housing was built to the density levels that are being proposed for the Hillcrest and UC areas which resulted in naturally occurring affordable housing in that area?
