Who is Ali Vaez? Ali Vaez, the author of this piece, worked at the International Crisis Group and under Robert Malley on the Iran nuclear file. He was in direct contact with Javad Zarif, then the Islamic Republic’s foreign minister. Leaked emails show that while living in the U.S., holding U.S. citizenship, and working within policy circles with Robert Malley, he wrote to Zarif: “As an Iranian, based on my national and patriotic duty, I have not hesitated to help you in any way.” That line speaks for itself and shows where his loyalty lies. If you want to know the formal propaganda talking points that the Islamic regime in Iran wants Americans to believe without any regard whatsoever for reality, read the messaging of Ali Vaez.

Great choice by the NYT to run an op-ed on Operation Epic Fury by Ali Vaez — who emailed Iran's foreign minister in 2014 pledging, as a matter of "national and patriotic duty," to help Iran campaign against nuclear breakout limits and prepare reports on Iran's "practical needs"

EXECUTIONS RISING: At least 657 Iranians have been executed in the first three months of 2026, putting the regime on pace to exceed previous records, according to the Iran Human Rights Society. The numbers point to a system intensifying repression as pressure mounts.

Day 35 of war with Iran and only 1% of the population have internet. That 1% isn’t normal citizens. The vast majority are regime agents on white SIM cards — the ones the government still keeps online so they can flood every platform with their narrative. People like me with Starlink or expensive configs? We’re 1% of that 1%. A tiny, fragile window to the outside world. And sometimes it feels crushing. Every single day I’m trying to push back against the tsunami of propaganda the regime and its supporters (both inside Iran and abroad) are pumping out. Every lie, every edited video, every twisted narrative. I screenshot, I translate, I document, I reply, I post, I repost… and I still catch myself thinking: Am I doing enough? Because when almost nobody else can even get online, it starts to feel like the truth is resting on the shoulders of a handful of us who have to fight tooth and nail to still have signal. If you’re reading this and you still have internet, you’re not just scrolling. You’re one of the last witnesses. Don’t look away. Be our voice. #DigitalBlackOutIran#KingRezaPahlavi‌ForIran

⚠️ Update: The internet blackout in #Iran is now on its 35th consecutive day as connectivity flatlines at 1% of ordinary levels after 816 hours. The general public remain cut off from the world without vital updates and without a voice as the incident closes its fifth week.

How interesting that Javad Zarif publishes this in English on X, a platform that is banned in Iran by his regime. He is a regime propagandist trying to undermine the security of the United States. He should not be allowed to post on X, in Foreign Affairs, or anywhere else, just as he and his regime don’t allow Iranian citizens to do that anywhere.
Javad Zarif@JZarif

As an Iranian, outraged by Donald Trump’s reckless aggression & crude insults, yet proud of our armed forces & resilient people, I am torn about publishing this peace-plan in Foreign Affairs. Yet I'm convinced that war must end on terms consistent with Iran’s national interests.

The terrorists of the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shabi), carrying Iraqi flags, have taken up positions in the streets and squares of Iran. They parade around, sowing fear and threatening massacres, while chanting their propaganda in the face of our people. What the Ba’athist regime of Saddam Hussein failed to impose on Iran during eight years of war, the criminal Islamic regime is imposing on the Iranian nation today. This is the ultimate disgrace of an anti-Iranian regime that, in order to survive, has handed the country over to foreign occupiers. This is the trampling of a nation’s pride and a blatant insult to the blood of those who defended the homeland for eight years against Iraq. Shame on every man in military uniform who stands beside the invading terrorists of Hashd al-Shaabi against the great nation of Iran. Where is the Iranian Army? Where are the veterans of the eight-year war with Iraq? Where has Iranian military honor gone, that Iraqi terrorists now lord over the lives, property, and honor of Iranians from Khuzestan to Tehran? The Hashd al-Shaabi and other Iraqi militias are invading and occupying forces. They have no place in Iran. They must be expelled immediately from the pure soil of Iran. Long live Iran, Reza Pahlavi

The bloodthirsty regime has taken another of Iran’s children. Amirhossein Hatami took to the streets on January 8th and 9th. For that, he was put through a sham trial, denied any defense, and murdered by this regime. At least four more protesters—Mohammadamin Biglari, Shahin Vahedparast, Abolfazl Salehi, and Ali Fahim—face the same fate at this very moment. The world must act before more blood is on its hands. To the Iranian people’s killers: Iran will be free and we will remember your names. You are sealing your own judgement.
Reza Pahlavi@PahlaviReza

The bloodthirsty regime in Iran is preparing to commit yet another unforgivable crime. Reports confirm that at least five sons of Iran who courageously took to the streets on January 8th and 9th—Mohammad Amin Biglari, Shahin Vahedparast Kolowr, Abolfazl Salehi Siavashani, Amirhossein Hatami, Ali Fahim, and potentially more—have been moved from their ward and transferred to an unknown location for likely execution. These young men are condemned not for anything they did, but because of what they represent. This regime’s sham courts do not seek justice, they seek to terrorize Iran into silence. They will fail. I call on @drmaisato and @UN_HRC and other international human rights institutions to urgently intervene to save the lives of these innocent young heroes.

The heads of Iran’s government branches are still alive. The majority of political decision-makers and core state institutions remain intact. There has not been sufficient focus by the U.S.–Israeli coalition on systematic decapitation. The core of the regime is still in place—and they do not yet feel meaningful pressure. This is a historic opportunity to dismantle the regime, and it must not be missed

The Islamic Republic will try to spin the downing of an F-15 as a major achievement, but it actually exposes how weak they are. 1⃣ It took over a month of war and thousands of flights over Iran for their first takedown. That reinforces what was already clear, Iran’s air defenses are weak and inconsistent. 2⃣ It exposed how vulnerable their airspace is. US helicopters and rescue aircraft flew low and deep inside Iran and stayed there for hours without facing effective anti-aircraft response. 3⃣ Even on their own territory, the IRGC could not reach the downed American pilots before the US did. One of the two has already been rescued. 4⃣ Instead, the IRGC called on civilians to go after the pilots, using them as human shields to do the work for them while their own forces stayed back. 5⃣ Even voices on popular Iranian military Telegram channels are warning that if both pilots are rescued without losses, it could give the US the confidence to carry out deeper and more aggressive airborne operations inside Iran. This shows the IRGC is unable to handle key aspects of this war beyond missiles and drones, and that it is exposed and vulnerable.
