@chrysryce @sciencegirl @humaneworldorg You tell yourself it's humane to make yourself feel better. It isn't and will never be humane to kill someone who doesn't want to die. The truth is you pay for the killing of innocent beings for frivolous taste pleasure when you can eat something else.

@sciencegirl My girlfriend and I quit eating factory pork years ago. I show my students factory farming pictures so they can know where inhuman meat comes from. I order from Butcher Box which is all humane and organic on a teachers salary. The only pork I eat is from them. @humaneworldorg

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
A turtle came into Wild At Heart Rescue in Mississippi last week painted from head to toe in silver and red. People keep doing this and it has to stop. A turtle's shell is living tissue full of blood vessels that absorbs sunlight to produce vitamin D, helps the turtle regulate body temperature, and in many aquatic species participates in the animal's breathing system. When a turtle is painted, all of that gets blocked. The turtle is no longer able to synthesize vitamin D where it's been painted and can develop metabolic bone disease as a result. (soft bones, deformed shell, slow death). The painted shell loses its camouflage too, making the turtle visible to every hawk and raccoon in the area. Removing the paint isn't a quick wash with a sponge. It involves multiple veterinary sessions, often with sedation, and many turtles arrive too damaged to ever recover. If you see a turtle with paint on its shell, do not try to clean it yourself. Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator right away.

@dieworkwear She didn't just criticise factory farming. It's about rejecting all forms of animal cruelty and exploitation, which is what veganism is about.

interesting to me to see how many people are upset at the guy throwing a rock at the monk seal (and rightly, as the guy is a psycho) and how many people are piling on billie ellish for criticizing factory farming

Your jar of honey has a pollen problem. In 2011, a researcher at Texas A&M tested 60 jars of honey from 10 American states. 76% of the supermarket samples had no pollen in them at all. Drugstore honey was 100% pollen-free. That's a problem. Pollen is the only way to verify where honey actually came from. Removing it (through ultra-filtration) erases the geographic origin and makes adulterated honey impossible to detect through standard testing. Honey "laundered" through a third country to hide its origin is a documented multi-billion-dollar industry. Cheaper sweeteners like rice syrup and corn syrup get mixed in. A 2023 EU study using improved testing methods found roughly 30 to 40% of honey on the global market is adulterated in some way. The good news: real honey isn't hard to find. Buy from local beekeepers at farmers markets. Look for "raw" honey that's slightly cloudy with visible particles. If your honey is perfectly clear and never crystallizes, that's not a feature, it's a sign that everything that made it honey has been filtered out.

@NothingIsArt Absurd, except perhaps in an imaginary nonexistent universe. In the real world, the role of carnivores is vital to ecological health. Without carnivorous predators, everyone and everything suffer.

@reucomments @sibaburck What side is that exactly? Vegans are on the animals' side. Eating animals is a personal choice that is demonstrably immoral, unsustainable, and harmful. You objectively cannot eat steaks and profess to care about the environment. You can, but that'd be hypocritical.

@sibaburck You are on the same side ultimately, this division is what loses elections in America over things that are personal choices - you can eat meat and care about the environment

Fire hydrants ran dry when the people need them most. While the proximate cause of the shortages has yet to be diagnosed, the underlying cause of water shortages in CA is quite clear: Animal Agriculture Here's a chart by the NYT based on research in Nature.

The biggest threat to this economic system is a happy, satisfied consumer. Our society has become a factory producing emotionally and ethically amputated humans, so that it can continue to sell us its expensive painkillers. As we desperately search for our missing parts within the dystopian consumaverse, they are nowhere to be found. Because they only exist outside of it. #consumatrons #capitalism #anthropology
