I don’t really begrudge her, she lives so close to the text. But, I think this is viewing the work of film adaptation as an act of “translation”, and not as a new work. Nolan’s The Odyssey isn’t Homer’s Odyssey. It’s a new work, in conversation with the original.

Among the many wonderful things Nolan’s Odyssey has done is making me reevaluate Matt Damon, which made me realize that I’ve badly undervalued the groundedness he brings even to extreme parts. I also realized that he has one of the more impressive filmographies of any movie star.

Don't think Villeneuve is bad but his films are devoid of the personal touches and flourishes that Nolan used to establish himself as his own filmmaker, separate from his influences, something that Villeneuve has yet to do. He's still kind of a journeyman to me, Nolan isn't.
