I’m 33 and for the first time since I turned 18, I’m registering as an independent. 2026 will also be the first election I’ve opted not to vote in. In the past, you could look at someone’s character and reliably identify their strength and achievements based on the way they were geared. This has been largely replaced in favor of cash shop items and bikini skins all while making the in-game drops look worse to push people towards swiping. Working hard on clearing difficult or sometimes simply repetitive content doesn‘t feel rewarding if all you get to show for it is some goofy title and all you get to flex with is your credit card. These days, MMOs are designed in a way that makes it possible for people to progress solo all the way. Plus, interacting with other players has been „optimized“ out to a point where most people would likely not be able to tell a difference if they were queued into a dungeon with AI bots. Some might even prefer it. To make things worse, MMOs started to introduce daily chores in an effort to increase player retention through psychological manipulation. Not only are daily quests repetitive and unfun, they prevent you from doing things you‘d rather do for the sake of „efficiency“. They also shift the mindset of the player base in a way that makes people impatient and irritable. Wiped on a boss once? Watch half your party rage quit because they need to clear it asap on as many characters as possible. MMOs have lost their identity as a massive world one can explore side by side thousands of other players and have turned into a glorified P2W queue simulator that has little to no appeal for new players that don‘t feel nostalgia for the „good old days“.

@9Rain3 prior to skillcape perks many 99s either had niche uses or no use. people playing in the 2000s did not feel like they had to max to play the game

Takes like this represent a majority of OSRS players and are a symptom not a cause. Players who don't enjoy skilling feel forced to do it when they should be able to happily avoid it (like in earlier iterations of the game). Dogpiling this guy is mean and counterproductive.
