There is a number sitting in the final report on the 2025 Invictus Games, it has to do with costs, and that number is $118,000. PER COMPETITOR. 500-something wounded veterans would mean $63,000,000 in total spend, and if you do the arithmetic (which I'm sure no one was supposed to do) you arrive at a per-veteran cost roughly equal to the median home price in 26 American states. Which is a lot of money, unless the competitors are being awarded actual pieces of real estate. ...which they are not. They are getting medals. The United States Warrior Games, which exists to do the same thing for veterans of the same wars, runs on $2,000,000, for a full year. The German equivalent runs on $200,000, which means the Germans are basically running their entire operation on what the Vancouver guys spend on high-end cheese platters. So, either Vancouver is uniquely expensive (fine, sure, maybe a cup of coffee there costs... 5,000 dollars?) or something else is happening here, and the thing happening here is a total scam that works because we have collectively agreed "charity for wounded veterans" is a phrase you cannot question without looking like a complete piece of trash. This is the trick that worked so well with things like USAID, by the way. Every charity-industrial apparatus, everywhere, runs on it. It’s a brilliant psychological hack. You attach a noble cause to a budget -> the budget becomes the noble cause. Ask why a wheelchair-curling tournament needed a $60,000,000 production line, and you are no longer asking about a tournament. You are asking about the veterans. And the veterans, as a rhetorical category, are not available for cross-examination, you monster! Veterans end up becoming a very, very lucrative human shield for a giant pile of cash. Meanwhile, a royal commentator is on the record asking whether the 'founder' is using the whole machinery as a personal tax write-off. There is no evidence he is, but... there is also no evidence he isn't. But "show us the ledger" is, somehow, the rudest question anyone is allowed to ask out loud. Oddly enough, the defense isn't "here are the books, look at them all you want." Nope, their defense is just pointing a finger at you and screaming that you're a bad person for wanting to see them. Or maybe systemic racism. Or unconscious bias. Or something else.

Between 2017-2019, China sent 2 million Muslims (including half a million children) to internment camps, where they were forced to drink alcohol and eat pork to ‘deprogram’ from Islam. China officially considers Islam a mental illness. Why does no one call China Islamophobic?

Here's a good joke for your Bank Holiday. A British magistrate identified in court papers only as "Taylor" has been deciding convictions and sentences for more than 100 British defendants from his home. In Portugal. The arrangement, conducted under the Single Justice Procedure - which is the streamlined process by which a magistrate can deal with minor offences without an open court hearing - was running for years before anyone in the British legal system noticed it was happening, and would still be running today if a fellow magistrate had not, at considerable personal cost, refused to take part and raised the alarm. The whistleblower in question is a serving magistrate who had concluded, after some study, that what was being done was unlawful. He is now suing the Ministry of Justice. He alleges that, having flagged the practice internally, he was bullied, ostracised and progressively excluded from the work he had volunteered to do. The only thing about this that's a surprise is that it's been exposed at all. This sort of baroque, even sublime level of piss-taking is, by now, a recognisable British institutional ritual. So, I must concede, is the reaction to it. An individual notices something is wrong, says so through the proper channels, is treated by the institution as the problem, gets bullied half to death, and ends up in court. We saw it with Alan Bates, with the consultants at the Letby ward, with the surveyors at Grenfell, and now with this magistrate, who has the additional indignity of having had to bring his case while his colleague was, presumably, still in the Algarve. The Ministry of Justice's response is the part of the story that most repays attention. Asked, by Sir Jeremy Hunt MP in Parliament, whether more than 100 convictions secured by a magistrate sitting from a different country might need to be revisited, the Ministry stated that there were "no grounds to suggest that any case where the magistrate conducted remote hearings from abroad was unlawful or needed nullification." The Senior Presiding Judge then advised, in a separate communication, that magistrates and judges should not, in fact, be conducting court proceedings from outside the United Kingdom, the diplomatic objections of the foreign states involved being one of the more obvious reasons. The two positions are not formally in conflict. They are, however, the same Ministry saying that an arrangement which the senior judiciary has now banned for the future was, until ten minutes ago, completely fine. Totally alright. One hundred British defendants (at the lower end of the magistrates' jurisdiction, sure, but the lower end is where most people in this country actually encounter the courts) have now been sentenced by a man from his holiday home. When the Ministry of Justice found out, it concluded that the arrangement was fine. When the Senior Presiding Judge found out, he concluded that it was not. The whistleblower who exposed the whole thing has, predictably, been treated by his colleagues as the problem and is now suing his own Ministry. The convictions, meanwhile, stand. I just hope I get the screenplay rights to this one. It's just too perfect an encapsulation of what the British genius, once responsible for the architecture of the world and man's command over nature, has been reduced to: running obvious abuses of office, rank, and authority for years under the noses of the people paid to notice but too thick or venal to actually notice. If we weren't being consistently saved by single people, heroic individuals, willing to throw themselves into the meat grinder to expose these charlatan prats by a single individual at his own cost, it's absolutely frightening to imagine where we'd be. In respect of abuses like this, like Chagos, like the rape gangs. Anyway, the arrangement ends and the convictions stand. The magistrate will fly back from Portugal (he's still sitting!). The Ministry of Justice will issue a procedural note. The whistleblower goes to tribunal. It's not only time we root-and-branched the criminal justice system in this country - in which 'criminal justice' has come to imply an affinity for the criminal, just as the 'Taylor Swift Holy Dinner Party & Human Affairs Circuit' implies an affinity for Taylor Swift - but our approach to whistleblowing as well. These are the only people preventing our slide into barbarism, as things stand. And whistleblowers who exposed dysfunctions of this kind will, under a Progress government, be honoured for the public service they have performed, and the institutions that punished them will be held to account for the punishing.

This case strikes me as extraordinary, both for the police behaviour and judge's apparent direction to the jury. Carrying an 8" knife is illegal with very limited exceptions which do not include "self defence". The Criminal Justice Act makes that plain, and the Sentencing Council says in terms "carrying a knife or other weapon for protection is not a lawful reason. " The Attorney General should be reviewing both this case and the case of the two teenage rapists ASAP. I don't know what is happening with our justice system at the moment, and I am not alone in that concern. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The girl who was raped by the traveller teens who avoided prison basically says what's the point in reporting rape when they just get let off? She is right, she put her through all this stress just to get told "yeah were letting them get away with raping you" What the hell is going on with our judges, these people are supposed to PUNISH criminals not let them get off. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is fed up of them giving criminals either light sentences or being let off completely with "community service"

The details emerging from the Henry Nowak case are genuinely harrowing. Jurors heard transcripts in court in which Henry Nowak can allegedly be heard saying: “I am dying.” According to the prosecution, Vickrum Digwa replied: “You’re not dying bro.” The prosecution said that around 10 minutes later, Henry told Digwa: “You stabbed me.” Digwa allegedly responded: “No I didn’t,” before saying: “You started recording me, thinking you’re sick.” The court was then shown an image taken from a video Digwa recorded of Henry lying on the ground. The prosecution asked him directly: “He’s lying on the floor saying he was dying and you made a video of his face, why?” Digwa replied: “I don’t know why.” Prosecutors also told the jury that when police arrived at the scene, Digwa repeatedly claimed Henry was “pretending.” Before the jury, Digwa said: “I thought that he was pretending to be in a worse condition than he was.” Just imagine those final moments. A young man allegedly saying “I am dying” while lying wounded on the ground… and being accused of pretending. It is difficult to read details like these and not feel completely heartbroken for Henry Nowak and his family. People across the country are following this case because they cannot comprehend the sheer horror of what the court is hearing.

The great British heatwave is underway. The supermarket is packed. The sausage aisle is busier than a nightclub on New Year’s Eve. One man has no top on. A woman just said “How about some kebabs on sticks? Will they do?” A chap just muttered “mustn’t forget coleslaw”. Someone else simply shouted “BUNS!” It’s all go.
