seeing 18 yos try to grind startups is heartbreaking to me. when i was that age i would spend all day in the college library finding obscure books nobody will ever read. not a single care about what i will do with that knowledge. easily the most valuable time of my life

It’s actually even worse than that. *You* are probably aligned with the world that no longer exists. You can’t use pattern matching based on people around you to plan the optimal plan for the future. You have to do some deep unconventional thinking, which even at the best of times has been a tall order.
Justin Welsh@thejustinwelsh

Your parents' advice is likely aligned with a world that died 15-20 years ago. Following it guarantees you'll optimize for problems that no longer exist. Ignore them with love.

@Dr_Singularity Collectivism vs. individualism. Americans are rightly perceiving it as a threat to their liberty. Chinese do not.

You’d think after spending the last decade building reflection tools I’d disagree with this. But I don’t. At least not entirely. And the difference helps me explain something I think is quite important. He’s right that introspection is relatively new. It emerged closer to a few thousand years ago. It just took till 400 years ago to build the systems that got something significant out of it. He’s also right that many great figures weren’t stuck in constant introspection. The self does dissolve at the peak of cognitive evolution. And most people today do get trapped in unproductive introspection. Here's where I see it differently. That peak comes after sustained, effective introspection. You work through competing impulses, interests, and relationships to reality. You integrate them. You make them automatic. Then you just act. If you skip the introspection, you stay stuck inside the self, driven by hidden forces you aren't aware of or don't understand. Modern technology creates the illusion that we are skipping ahead. But in reality it’s often the mechanism holding us back. It does this by centering us on the self (ie, personalization). That’s why so many people feel off or get stuck. And this is where I think the distinction really matters. If we use AI to continue to skip introspection, we'll not only have less great figures and we’ll be ruled by our lowest impulses. This story only has bad endings. If we can create more effective introspection, with AI or otherwise, then we I think have a fighting chance at the more optimistic outcomes ahead.

Billionaire Marc Andreessen says he has "zero" introspection, and that the idea itself is a modern invention.

"We don't always learn what the teacher intends" is very true.
Peter Gates@petergates3

@DavidBulley @AdrianBethune What about the blanket statement “children don’t need to like the teacher to learn” Kids will learn in all sorts of environments. Its what homo “sapiens” do. We dont always learn what the teacher intends though!

@davidpattersonx It’ll depend on how we use AI. It’s both the source of darkness and the light.

Has anyone else noticed that people have become more evil? Canada used to be a good country, and is now openly evil in many things. It's not the government, it's the people. Most of my family and friends have become more evil over time. We seem to have reached a sort of peak evil. Anything more and society would completely collapse. And it might. I don't even bother to struggle against it anymore. It seems hopeless. My only hope is that AI will fix it.

We're doing a massive disservice to young people by not telling them the truth: the world they're preparing for no longer exists. These are the tough but REAL conversations we're having at the @Abundance360 with @amasad

@ramez Either something is different about AI and these experts know it, or AI breaks the brains of experts in a way no other technology does. Which are you more willing to believe: that experts know more than us, or that they're more subject to hysteria?
