Same in the US — typically only5-10 of the same popular mass market varieties in shops (and 10 is in-season.) Farmstands, farm markets, & small local orchards are the best bet for old and interesting varieties. Ask local cider makers for tips too.

@aka_pugs @IEEEorg @sciam It wasn't my soap bubble photos, it was my 8th-grade science project about projecting and photographing moiré patterns. October 1973 edition! The Amateur Scientist staff at @sciam largely rewrote the text to improve on my 8th grade report. Lots of "help" from Daddy, of course!

15/ My Dad received @IEEEorg journals and the @sciam at home. He was a huge fan of Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games. Nerd heaven. My brother @blyon3 actually got a bubble-popping photo experiment published in the Amateur Scientist column.

1/ Today would've been the 100th birthday of William L. Lyon, Jr. - my dear father, Lyon family patriarch, inveterate tinkerer, lover of math & science tricks & puzzles, and a kind, humble, and generous man/nerd. And he kept the lights on for the City of El Paso. 🧵

Or maybe that IP issue since I often use a VPN. Fidelity&Chase “know” me well but WF is the one that guaranteed my ID. Go figure.

I want to buy some I-bonds, which requires a @TreasuryDirect account. TreasuryDirect wants me to verify my id/sig on a Form FS 5444 guaranteed by a financial institution. @Fidelity and @Chase refused, but luckily @WellsFargo , where I am not a customer, helped me out.
