I live in a small town of roughly 2,000 people. One of the initiatives here that started before I moved in is a little book booth. The idea is straightforward: instead of throwing your books away, you bring them to the booth and donate them. Anyone can stop by, browse, and take whatever they like - or drop off more. Today, I spotted a complete collection of the Encyclopædia Britannica in very good condition. In 1990, a set like this would have cost around US$2,000. Now, they're being given away or thrown out entirely. I don't want to sound overly nostalgic - I know it's just the way things go. Nobody uses a rotary phone anymore, and faxes have pretty much disappeared too. Still, I couldn't leave them there. I said thank you and took the whole set home. As a kid, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' house, where they had a full collection. I'd often pick a random volume and start reading. It was fascinating and one of the only ways to explore the world before the internet became mainstream. Tonight, I'm going to pick a random letter and see what I discover. Did you ever do this as a kid, just grab a volume at random and dive in?

@davepl1968 if you have access to port config, check the obvious duplex, rate, spanning tree, etc. to make sure everything's matched up. Then bounce them if you have to.

Does anyone know why, at all defaults, I'd get 25Gbe in one direction and 10Gbe in the other direction? Same transceiver on both ends (25Gbe fiber 10GTek)

Listen. I’ve said it before, but here goes. Virtually all good writers use Ai as a tool. It’s in your auto editors such as Grammarly, PWA, AutoCrit. If you’re not using some tools, I’d say you’re working hard and not smart. I know some writers have blocked me for saying it: C’est la vie. You do you. However, this #ShyGirl kerfuffle is not the same. I have lots of questions. Lots.

• be Torakusu Yamaha • the son of a low-ranking samurai astronomer in 19th-century Japan • obsessed with Western machines, you make a living repairing watches and medical equipment • 1887: a local elementary school has a broken American reed organ. Nobody in the small town knows how to fix it. • you take it apart, realize it’s just two broken springs, and easily repair it • but instead of just handing it back, you realize: "If I can fix this, I can build it." • you draw a blueprint of the inside of the organ and build the very first Japanese-made reed organ from scratch • you show it off. People tell you it sounds terrible. • most people would quit. You sling the heavy wooden organ over your shoulder on a bamboo carrying pole. • you physically carry it 160 miles (250 km) on foot, trekking over the brutal Hakone mountains just to reach the Tokyo Music Institute to get real feedback from experts • the professors play it. They tell you the mechanics are brilliant, but the tuning is completely wrong. • you don't get defensive. You stay in Tokyo for a month, sitting in on university music theory lectures, holding a single tuning fork to your ear until you completely master the mathematics of sound frequencies • you walk 160 miles back home • you build a second organ. The professors test it and declare it "as good as those from abroad." • you found Nippon Gakki Co. (which later becomes Yamaha Corporation) • you decide to make your company logo three interlocking tuning forks to remember the pain and discipline of learning music theory from scratch • decades later, your company uses its piano woodworking expertise to build wooden airplane propellers in WWII • after the war, the company uses its new metallurgical expertise from the airplane engines to build motorcycles • you accidentally create a timeline where repairing a broken elementary school organ directly leads to the creation of the Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike • absolute, relentless horizontal integration based purely on figuring out how things work The ultimate testament to reverse-engineering reality.

@exQUIZitely When you heard the intro to any Sierra game with full Roland MT 32 for MIDI and sound blaster for wave - it was the ultimate!

I'm so out of touch, I don't even know if PC gamers these days still bother with sound cards... is that still a thing? What I do remember, though, is that the Roland MT-32 was the most unachievable piece of hardware ever back in the day, at least for me.

@hercules_guitar Same exact thing with the boss SY-1 synthesizer pedal. I am now trained to immediately turn that off as soon as I power up the board.

Northern Exposure (1990-95). Quirky plotlines, pixie haircuts, folksy wisdom and a moose. This is probably one of the top 10 TV shows of the '90s and is worth a rewatch if you ever just need a break from things.

Thanks. To add to this, if people really want to dig into whether astro images are AI-generated or not, don't ask Grok, don't use AI detection software, load them into astronomy.net, and see if the stars line up with reality. AI is terrible at detecting AI.

It’s a damn shame that in this day and age real talent is taken for A.I., and far too often A.I. is mistaken as real. More amazing work here by Paul!

Exposing the tetanus hoax - In the last decade 13 died from tetanus in the US. - It's a vaccine that can be taken at the time of injury. Yet babies are given 5 shots. - The risk is that 1 in 154 million will die from tetanus. Another Big Pharma scam!

Amazon Prime Video adding ads = fastest and worst enshittification I've experienced. Went from "a nice bonus to Prime sub" to unusable overnight. Even old stuff like Waterworld had 3 ad breaks. This feels far worse than YouTube. At least that's free!

The miraculous result of Billy Gibbons' on-its-face- insane desire to make ZZ Top sound more like Depeche Mode, ‘Eliminator’ is forty-five minutes of ecstatic hooks and Fairlight boogie whose London-Texas groove is nothing less than a fully novel musical vernacular. A masterwork.
