@RossBarkan He was correct when he said property taxes are grotesquely unequal. He needed to tackle that first (a huge lift, so here I'm sympathetic) before threatening to raise taxes, as the existing system means this falls disproportionately on working class neighborhoods

Biggest political mistake Zohran Mamdani has made so far was threatening to raise property taxes. Whether it's a good idea or not, it's politically TOXIC and also had no chance of happening. City Council wouldn't pass it. And he clearly just wanted to use it as a negotiating ploy

@bobbyfijan @mathieuhelie Don't understand this at all. DOE budget is approx 42B for about 1 million students, leading to 42K per student, highest per pupil expenditure in nation. How is this "going bust?"

@mathieuhelie When a very large % the people leaving are ones with kids … it makes a huge difference One of the reasons NYCs education budget (along with many other urban cities) is going bust is bc they are losing kids.

@nicolegelinas "Trump proofing" also seems to involve identifying new revenue streams -- additional taxes on New Yorkers -- to guard against potential losses of federal contributions to NYC's budget.

You do wonder what they will do after Trump ... they will be completely bereft of ideas. Trump is the best thing that ever happened to them. Maybe Trump will get a third term and they will be off the hook to say anything positive about their own ideas!

Billionaires are turning West Village apartments into $75M Frankenmansions. They're taking housing away from regular New Yorkers and driving everyone's rents sky-high. Housing should be a human right—not a trophy for the ultra-rich.

@emmabgo This looks like normalizing a president I've been told for the last decade is an existential threat to democracy. But if Mamdani does it, it's fine with the NYT. (Meanwhile NYT sports section comes down on hockey team for attending SOTU and providing cover to Trump).

i think one issue mamdani is running into is that if you have a deficit, it's hard to say that the only options are 1. raise taxes on the rich or 2. raise taxes on a different group (property owners)...

@AlbaneseNYC @ZohranKMamdani Thanks for your insight. I would prefer that he reaches out to Catholics and is an inclusive mayor. If this was indeed a political mistake, I'm happy to hear it, and look forward to future outreach to Catholics.

The Adams Administration stopped the Streets Master Plan. We’re bringing it back.   We’re kicking off four bold NYC street projects: faster buses on the Bronx’s busiest route, a continuous protected bike route all the way from Sunset Park to DUMBO, protected bike lanes around 10 schools in Central Brooklyn, and a connected bike network for Midwood, Flatbush, and East Flatbush. Streets that work for everyone—not just cars.

What's disgraceful is we in the US are governed according to slogans. NYS taxes the rich, heavily. A chart around here showed the wealthy pay a higher share of taxes in the US than they do in Europe. Forget facts, invent a good slogan.
Sally Goldenberg@SallyGold

NEW: @NYCMayor and top aides have been evaluating whether he’d attend a “Tax The Rich” Rally later this month in Albany, given @GovKathyHochul’s opposition to a tax increase. This week he told allies he likely won’t go. W/ @emmabgo: nytimes.com/2026/02/13/nyr… via @NYTimes

I spent last night visiting warming centers around the city, where homeless New Yorkers are taking refuge from the cold, and spoke with some about what they're experiencing — and the Mamdani administration's efforts to gert people indoors. New @NYTMetro nytimes.com/2026/02/09/nyr…

@AlbaneseNYC Agree if he actually wanted to reach out to all New Yorkers. But it seems like a political calculation because his base - the "commie corridor," hardly practicing Catholics - would be unhappy by his attendance.

I would have him advised him to attend! The leader of the most important diocese in the US & in NYC where Z is Mayor was installed. Don’t k know what pressing duties kept him away.

I wonder if the rookie @NYCMayor worries about how this could be perceived by católicos? Hey, @AielloTV do you know if Hizzhonor has called or spoken with Archbishop Hicks to welcome him?

@queens_parents Jean, your Islamophobia is once again showing on this cold morning. The media stated King Zohran Mamdani, leader of the Democratic Party, had a perfect response to the snow. Thou shalt not criticize thy King, Jean. A future on Rikers may be in store for you!

He's, like, laser-focused on his schedule of gimmicks (including this non-accessible step-requiring press conference), rather than sturdily dealing with his first real crisis.
