My visit to Iceland concluded with a talk delivered to students of the 2025–2026 cohort participating in the six-month training @gro_ftp. The two lectures focused on Africa’s aquaculture landscape and the role of NARO in catalysing transformative aquaculture research in Uganda.

The Practical training on #BlackSoldierFly (#BSF) mass rearing and scaling of #ClimateSmartFish Feed Innovations in Uganda is underway in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. It is running from to October 21, to October 25, 2025 and is organized by @ASARECA in collaboration with the National Agricultural Research Organization (@narouganda ), Centre for Insect Research and Development (CIRD) in Kawanda, and @ICIPE The overall objective of the practical training, farmer field day and #technologydissemination exercise is to learn about BSF mass rearing, on-farm fish feed formulation and dissemination of BSF production starter kits to strengthen capacities of aquaculture innovation platforms to scale up proven #CSA TIMPs. During the training, farmers from over 32 districts drawn from 9 Aquaculture Innovation Platforms across 9 subregions of Uganda will learn about BSF mass rearing, on-farm fish feed formulation and dissemination. They will receive BSF production starter kits to strengthen capacities of the Aquaculture Innovation Platforms to scale up proven CSA TIMPs. The training is funded under the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP-XP4) Programme, which is financed by the @EU_Commission and managed by @IFAD. It builds on the structures of the #InnovationPlatforms supported by the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (@PressACP ) through the ACP Innovation Fund, which is funded by the @EU_Commission (@EU). @EU_Commission @EUinUG @IFAD @IFADPresident @AsarecaED

The items include: 10 quality breeding bucks; 12,000 ear tags; 3 Samsung data collection tablets; 3 platform digital weighing scales; 2 hanging digital weighing scales; 5 ear tag applicators; & assorted agrochemicals. The AICCRA (@CGIARAfrica) Project is funded by the @WorldBank and is managed by Alliance Bioversity and CIAT (@BiovIntCIAT_eng). Handing over the equipment, @ASARECA Ag. Head of Finance, Ms @AnnetWanyana said @ASARECA is committed to supporting initiatives that improve livelihoods of farmers through enhanced productivity in crops and livestock via intermediary national level institutions. .

ASARECA and partners implementing the Accelerating Impacts of @CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (@CGIARAfrica ) Project (aiccra.cgiar.org) including Alliance of Bioversity International and @BiovIntCIAT_eng , the lead institution for the @CGIARAfrica project, @ILRI , and @ICARDA on August 27, 2025 paid a courtesy call on the Acting Director Bulindi Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (@Bulindi_Zardi), of the National Agricultural Research Organization @narouganda , Dr. Moses Mwesigwa, at his offices in Bulindi, Hoima district. During the meeting, Dr. Mwesigwa committed to ensuring that @NARO will ensure farmers develop a mindset of ownership of the Community Based initiative, which has just been introduced to the district. “Our main role is to empower the farmers to become experts of their own,” he said. “From the science angle, @narouganda will support the framers to introduce the right pastures and fodder to optimize nutrition.” The chief trainer for the community-based initiative, Dr. Aynalem Haile, @ICARDA Senior Livestock scientist, urged the Director to take lead in supporting the monitoring of the genetic improvement initiative. “It is critical to emphasize the improvement of the local breeds through selection of desired traits, nutrition, and promoting animal health and institutionalizing the practices of the best bet approach,” Dr. Haile counselled. @ASARECA provided a heavy-duty platform (surface) digital weighing scale and a Samsung tablet to BuZARDI for monitoring progress to the breeding programme. The initiative is funded through the @CGIARAfrica project, which is financed by the @WorldBank and aims to strengthen the technical, institutional, and human capacity needed to enhance transfer of climate-relevant information, decision-making tools, and technologies in support of scaling efforts in IDA-eligible countries in Africa.

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kibaale District in Western Uganda, Mr. John Katotoroma has praised ASARECA and partners, National Agricultural Research Organization @narouganda , Bulindi Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (@BulindiZ ), the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (@CGIARAfrica ) Project (aiccra.cgiar.org) in partnership with the Alliance of Bioversity International and @BiovIntCIAT_eng , the lead institution for the @CGIARAfrica project, @ILRI , and @ICARDA for training farmers and agricultural extension officers in the district on Community Based Breeding Programme (#CBBP). “The work you are doing is meant to make real and practical improvements in the livelihoods of farmers in Kibaale,” the CAO said while officiating at the closing ceremony of the two-day training. “I urge the agricultural extension officers to follow up this life changing initiative by monitoring every step in the development of the initiative. This pricey offer must succeed,” the CAO said on August 26, 2025 at Kibaale Sub-County headquarters. The CAO enumerated various existing Government of Uganda initiatives which are available in the district for the farmers to take advantage of to ensure success of the pioneer community-based animal (goat) genetic improvement.
