@OGTaylorB @jdcmedlock Except the tariffs as they are now will be a higher tax on middle income families than whatever income tax reduction will be

@jdcmedlock The economy was very big news in 2022. Also, correct me if I'm wrong sir, but I think some people were even predicting hyperinflation.

@MuseZack @ArmandDoma @mattyglesias the Iraq war was already going to shit in 2004 - Fallujah falling into chaos and the pictures from Abu Ghraib were earlier in 2004 - I'd say that was a big reason Kerry did as well as he did

@ArmandDoma @mattyglesias has been making the case for 20 years that Kerry overperformed the fundamentals. The Iraq war going to shit, the mortgage meltdown & financial crisis, and the botched Katrina response were still in the future in 2004.

@MattZeitlin this is the thing i saw the most weird memes and AI-slop about in my FB feed - lots of stuff connecting abortion with the draft and lots of stuff making being in the military seem really sad "finallllly going hommme"

I understand it’s a way of expressing anxiety about wars spinning out of control, but this apparent real belief gen z men have that there could have been a draft if kamala won is kinda funny for those of us who lived through bush’s wars

@BMarchetich Preelection my FB was jammed with AI slop of sad soldiers holding signs saying they wanted to go home or clips of ww2 movies blaming their upcoming ww3 deaths on girls for supporting abortion. They were corny as hell but I think their purpose was to create this worldview

All of the responses and the commentary on them are fascinating, but what's particularly striking is that this is yet another instance where Trump voters bring up his perceived opposition to war as a reason for picking him. youtube.com/watch?v=CeFF4s…

.@BreakingPointsN is quite easily the best political show around today, not just because of its informed, genuinely ideologically diverse commentary, but also because of stuff like this: they went and talked to Trump/AOC voters to understand their choice. (Link in next tweet).

A Sunday roast, binging on a box set with your partner on the sofa, dropping your kids off at a sports class, snoozing through your alarm. ... then in an instant PUTIN BOMBS YOU and you're dead, but Owen Jones doesn't care because you're Ukrainian.

A Sunday roast, binging on a box set with your partner on the sofa, dropping your kids off at a sports class, snoozing through your alarm. The thing about civilisation is it’s easy to take for granted, and then in an instant you’re in an apocalyptic wasteland craving death

@HeerJeet whatever side you take on Israel's war in Gaza, it's hard to shake the fact that the Biden admin came off as very weak on it. some of that is because of intentional behavior of bad actors - but he put still himself and Harris in a total corner on it

I'll just note that argument that "Slotkin, who is Jewish, won, so pro-Palestinian sentiment doesn't count" is based on implicit, false, and liblous premise that to be pro-Palestinian is to be antisemitic. It further ignores real political difference between Sltokin on this issue & Biden/Harris. It's a bad argument made by dishonest people trying to defend the indefensible.

Elissa is Jewish. Elissa is Pro-Israel. Elissa is a Democrat. Elissa won a US Senate seat in Michigan. All those “Gaza lost us Michigan” takes were 100% fabricated.

@ettingermentum Rightly or wrongly, I think people coming in and claiming asylum instead of just sneaking in and working under the table changed a lot of people's perceptions. People see asylum seekers as a burden more than prior undocumented folks

This is something that’s missed in a lot of discussion about the legacy of 2019ism—the public opinion was there for a lot of those policies at the time. The consensus story of arrogant elites walking into a woodchipper doesn’t really account for that.
Matt Grossmann@MattGrossmann

The long-term public opinion trend on immigration was toward more favorable attitudes. It only reversed after Biden came into office & dramatically & saliently moved immigration policy leftward. If Trump visibly mass deports, it should be expected to become more favorable again

@BrianManzo20 @ByMikeBaker I voted No (on purpose) but I agree - both the wording of the initiative itself and also both the Yes and No campaigns' mailers were even more confusing. option one was "yeah, no" and option two was "no, yeah"

@ByMikeBaker The fact that anyone would vote to continue paying an extra 50 cents for a gallon of gas proves that the wording on the ballot for the initiatives was confusing.

By rejecting Initiative 2117, voters in Washington State sustained an ambitious climate law that caps carbon emissions and uses money from major polluters to invest in environmental programs. The vote was being watched by political leaders across the country.

@YourAnonNews I don't live in a swing state but out in the world I saw way fewer signs and bumper stickers and things like compared to 2020 or 2016. I think people were way less engaged on both sides but especially for the dems. Also vote-by-mail probably increased turnout in 2020

Something doesn't add up. In 2020 Biden had 81 Million votes, Trump had 74 Million votes. In 2024 Harris got 66 Million votes, Trump got 71 million votes. 15 Million Democrats decided to sit this one out? 3 Million MAGA decided to sit this one out? No fucking way.
