📉 Bad News: MiniMax M2.7 is closed weights. No HuggingFace release = no local inferencing. 🛡️ Good News, you can still use it with 100% privacy. Use @novita_labs (US SF-based) via @OpenRouter. They operate under a Zero Retention agreement: 🚫 No logging inputs 🚫 No storing chat history 🚫 No training on your prompts 📜 “You acknowledge and agree that we shall not log, store, or retain any User Content, including but not limited to your Inputs, prompts, chat histories, or any Outputs generated by the Services, unless we have obtained your prior written consent for specific instances.” If we can't get open weights, zero retention is better than nothing. 🤝

@BrodieOnLinux my point is that we are a minority, ultimately nobody apart from tech users will care enough, and this is a losing battle - you may send a letter to your representative, but that same representative is lobbied with millions of dollars to do exactly the opposite of what you want

Today I've learned that telling people to protest the government about age verification laws instead of lashing out at the nearest target means that you: Are a supporter of the age verification laws and Are a government shill Man I love this website

@BrodieOnLinux @lethe_kawaii yeah, but at that point when it's illegal, it becomes a super small minority that has access to such services, and they will find out and jail you. The whole point is to increase friction and use repression on those who don't comply.

Great moves by Microsoft!
Zac Bowden@zacbowden

BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux! It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification. Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more! File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier. The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too. Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update. Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete. There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

@BrodieOnLinux @coinwitch yeah, but less and less. Systemd is now deeply integrated in many parts of the OS, it's not just a boot system anymore.

Moderators of the r/Linux subreddit are now censoring posts which talk about Age Verification. Not only are posts being removed, but I’ve heard from multiple Reddit users who have been banned from r/Linux for expressing opposition to Age Verification.

I've had too many popular takes recently, we need to change that. I hate the look of CRT filters, every time I see them I think the game looks worse.

The fact that Kojima Productions can achieve this level of detail with Unreal’s Metahuman techstack, specialized scanning equipment, and understanding of the cinematic medium WITHOUT having to rely on 2 RTX 5090s only proves the AI-infected techbros has lost their capability.

@BoilingSteam @BrodieOnLinux I think thats the point... Wayland is trying to become the dominate server so linux is always worse than Windows or macOS. The day Wayland becomes mandatory is the day I just give up on linux and go back to windows. As its a worse experience overall, and a annoying one.

If you want to go and remove Wayland support from an DE, it's your project, do what you want with it, but do keep in mind that by doing so you're never going to see widespread adoption on Linux. If you want to change the direction from Wayland, going back to X11 is not it.
probono@probonopd

Great to see a desktop environment that actively removes #Wayland dependencies. Way to go @SonicDesktop. Let's liberate our systems from all components controlled by XDG/Red Hat that have been holding back open source desktops for decades. github.com/Sonic-DE/sonic…
