@Joeinblack It is a big part of why people leave. In the US the church practices the love of the rule and not the rule of live.

Today, as is true many days, hours were spent on the phone trying to muddle through paperwork, bureaucrats and canon lawyers so that Catholics can exercise their right to get married. This process is broken and insane. It’s part of the reason people leave the practice of the faith. They get engaged and try to book the church and their wedding. They often run into tired and grumpy priests and staffers who act like they’re doing a couple of favor. Beth and provide them with a number of loopholes to jump through in order to make sure that everyone knows who’s in charge. If they somehow get through all that, they then run into the brick wall that is the world’s longest, running bureaucracy, filled with diocese who require different things and don’t accept the forms from other Diocese. They run into conflicting policies and, by the time they are done, they haven’t had an experience of Jesus. They haven’t had an experience of the church rejoicing with them.

Story One: I’ve got a former parishioner who moved to a diocese in California. He became Catholic while there this Easter & is getting ready to marry a Catholic gal. His new diocese is requiring his mother had to fill out a form promising he had not married before. I had to sign the document because her word was not enough, apparently. Not only that, but I am required to send this document to my chancellor to sign because apparently, my word is not enough either. I called the diocese in California four days ago to ask why my word is not enough and why they are requiring this extra step. I left my number and asked them to call back because they are scaring this groom. They never called me back. What they did do was call the groom to be and tell him they need that form ASAP.

@hillbillythings Did when I went thru RCIA after a Saturday Vigil Mass with our family present. Was not a big deal, as our kids were at our parish school and we were active in the parish.

My husband is a cradle Catholic, and I am a convert (to be confirmed at Easter Vigil this year). We got married on a mountainside in North Carolina in 2019. We want to convalidate our marriage. Has anyone ever done this? It seems daunting.

Just like anyone, you can never agree with someone 100% of the time. That's not realistic, but Senator Kennedy gets my blessings today. Thank you sir!
