Imagine tagging the FBI because you’re mad you got caught cheating in Valorant. Let's talk about the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). The CFAA criminalizes unauthorized access to a computer. Riot isn't sneaking into your PC in the dead of night; you literally clicked "Accept" on a Terms of Service agreement and a massive User Account Control prompt giving Vanguard permission to install and run. You authorized it. Furthermore, enforcing a standard Intel or AMD security feature (IOMMU) that is already built into your processor is not "destruction of private property." No hardware was melted. If a cheater unplugs their $300 DMA cheat card, the PC boots perfectly fine. But my favorite part is invoking the "CCP state-level threat." You are trying to turn a routine anti-cheat update into a geopolitical crisis. If the Chinese government wanted to launch a cyber-espionage campaign against American citizens, they wouldn't do it by updating a video game anti-cheat to make sure 19-year-olds stop wallhacking in Immortal lobbies. The FBI computer crimes division is going to print this out just to have a laugh in the breakroom. Put down the tin foil hat, unplug the cheat device, and go outside.
the real elizibar@elizibar

It's amazing that Riot is openly confessing to violating the CFAA. @FBI your computer crimes division should be investigating the destruction of private property by a company owned by the Chinese Communist Party. This is a state-level threat to the privacy of Americans.

I find it truly remarkable that the people responsible for writing the laws that govern the American workforce, also known as Congress, only work about 147 days a year, which is barely half the workload they impose on everyone else.

@grandestscheme Yes - and nothing is being damaged anyway. It’s disabled using low-level system tools. It’d be as stupid as trying to sue a drug dealer for poor quality drugs under consumer sales law.

Almost seven years clean and sober. Not a victory lap. Just a fact. To anyone in the fight right now: it gets quieter. Not easier. Quieter. In the quiet, you find out who you actually are. That’s the part they can’t take from you.

@ManaByte You can't make this stuff up. They jailbreak their rigs, void their warranties, waive legal claims, and now they're looking to steal from the company that caught them cheating to cover their non-losses. Script kiddie, listen here buddy, just reformat your rig and play fair ok?

Let’s be entirely real here. The only people currently forcing themselves into a "clean reinstall of the OS" are panicked cheaters who flooded their systems with sketchy custom firmware, custom kernel drivers, and registry tweaks to try and hide their DMA cards from Vanguard. You didn't get hit by malware; you broke your own operating system trying to bypass game security, and now you’re suffering the consequences of your own terrible tech decisions. A normal, legitimate PC doesn't need an OS reinstall after this update. It just needs the user to enter their BIOS and turn on a standard virtualization feature built by Intel and AMD. Calling Vanguard "rootkit malware" because it caught you trying to inject unauthorized memory manipulation is peak comedy. You happily gave root-level access to the shady Discord vendor who sold you a cheat device, but the second a video game company uses standard Windows security to lock you out, you start crying about digital rights. No one manipulated your computer but you. Take the L, unplug the cheat card, and learn how to play the game natively.

I don't think it's in the T&A that a game company is allowed to brick your shit. Ban you? Yes. Destroy your property? No.

Crazy how as soon as this dropped, everyone suddenly became an expert on the topic here on Twitter. There must be a reason if you’re not part of the dev team of the best anti cheat system in the world, right? Only people mad about this are either cheaters or delusional
Riot Games@riotgames

Well, that escalated quickly. There’s been a wave of claims by cheaters about Vanguard “bricking” their PCs, so let’s clear that up: Vanguard does not damage hardware or disable your devices. The photo we posted is a picture of cheat hardware devices that are sold explicitly for cheating in VALORANT (not normal PCs or PC components). Through our latest updates, Vanguard now makes those devices worthless for VAL, but does not in any way brick PCs or PC components or PC software. Our latest update enforces standard platform security features, like the Input-Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU), on accounts identified as using Direct Memory Access (DMA) cheating devices. These protections are already part of modern systems and when enabled, they block DMA cheat devices (such as those shown in the photo) from accessing memory in downstream applications, like our games. If a cheat setup continues attempting to cheat after those protections are enabled, the system may generate hardware faults or instability. This is expected behavior under IOMMU when attempts are made to read protected memory. Disabling IOMMU allows the cheat device to function again, but IOMMU will still be required to play our games. This means the cheat device won’t work with our games, but your PC isn’t “bricked.” We would not, and cannot, impact your PC’s functionality in any other fashion. This functionality only applies to systems attempting to use DMA cheat devices, and players who are not using DMA-based cheat setups are not affected. We’ll keep investing in anti-cheat to protect competitive integrity, and we’ll keep being as transparent as possible about how those systems work.

Let me explain IOMMU simply. the library is hardware. your journal is the game memory. IOMMU is a lock on the journal. Some other person is the hardware cheat. This does not lock other books. This does not break the shelves. This doesn’t destroy the building. This does stop the other person (cheat hardware) from reading *your journal* That’s it. That’s what IOMMU does. Riot stopped cheaters from reading the game memory. No it doesn’t harm your RAM, PC, or even the cheat Hardware. It just blocks it.
