@cahillbooks the clips from the show are v confusing in that it mixed the two up. Folk songs played by trad bands. They are two different things to be honest. one is ability driven and the other is passion driven. Like the Late Late Prog Rock special and they cover Anarchy in the UK.

@NormanLeedsPhD @MDC12345678 Protected from who? The only country that we were ever threatened by was the UK. From the famine to the Black and Tans to Bloody Sunday to Kincora and the FRU what protection were we enjoying?

@KajFjorthur @MDC12345678 As I said Ireland was part of the UK in WW1. From 1922 onwards the new state claimed neutrality. Some Irish citizens volunteered for the British forces in WW2 and some still do so, but the Irish state remains neutral, while expecting to be protected by the UK.

@obrien_jonathan Went to Clongowes. Nothing wrong per se with going to private school if you can afford it but possibly means not an expert on people on "benefits".

Listening to the Ben Elton autobiography on Spotify. It's v good although you end up with inner monologue in Ben Eltons voice after listening to it. That and hating Thatcher. (little bit of politics)

I'll be one of the people affected, as a teacher I would never use my real name due to the public nature of the job, but I still think it's a good idea because it will basically kill all social media in Ireland
Adrian Weckler@adrianweckler

The goal here, aside from age-verification, appears to be a ban on anonymity in social media accounts. ie To reduce volume of home-grown trolls, bad-faith, disinfo (a real problem). But it also may amount to a government licence to post opinions — a little dystopian?

This period and the confederate wars are two of the most interesting periods of Irish History. Dont ever hear much about them. Would be great setting for historical drama that RTE could produce with all the money they get in taxes.
BUCHANAN: Dublin Time Machine@RobLooseCannon

Today in 1602 the Battle of Kinsale marked a turning point in the Nine Years’ War. This was an epic clash, not just of armies but of ideologies. Gaelic autonomy versus Tudor centralisation, and Catholicism versus Protestantism. The Nine Years’ War began in 1594, when Hugh O’Neill, the second Earl of Tyrone, defied English attempts to dominate Ulster. Central to this resistance was an English effort to install sheriffs in Gaelic territories. O’Neill introduced a religious dimension in November 1599, issuing 22 articles that demanded the open practice of Catholicism throughout Ireland. This appeal to religion aligned O’Neill with Catholic Spain, ruled by Philip II, who had been in contact with O’Neill since 1591. Spanish assistance finally materialised in September 1601, when 3,300 troops under Juan del Águila landed at Kinsale in County Cork. This forced O’Neill and his ally Hugh Roe O’Donnell to undertake a gruelling march south to support their Spanish allies. Meanwhile, Lord Mountjoy, the English Lord Deputy of Ireland, moved swiftly to besiege Kinsale with approximately 7,000 troops. After weeks of manoeuvring, the climactic battle occurred on the 3rd of January 1602. The combined Irish and Spanish forces, numbering about 10,000, faced Mountjoy’s well-disciplined army. Miscommunication between the Irish and Spanish hampered their coordination. The English cavalry shattered O’Neill’s ranks in just two hours, forcing the Gaelic forces into retreat. Realising victory was impossible, the Spanish negotiated terms that allowed them to return to Spain without formally surrendering.

@sinead_kerins @griptmedia fair question. my concern would be more on the salaries. how much of this goes to paying Ryan Tubridy style salaries to people who think they would earn much more elsewhere. Gov should not pay out to any org unless there is clear rules around salaries and perks.

The 10 organisations are Concern Worldwide, Trócaire, GOAL, Christian Aid Ireland, Self Help Africa, Oxfam Ireland, World Vision Ireland, Plan International Ireland, Sightsavers Ireland, and Action Aid Ireland. None of these are related to climate action are they? I believe gender equality in these orgs mean promoting education for girls. Can you explain gript what you are on about here.

Sorry, real documented wartime atrocities? I’m begging you to even read the Wikipedia entry for this film. The atrocities depicted in this film are not accurate to the Revolutionary War. The British did not shoot children for kicks and burn down churches filled with civilians
cinesthetic.@TheCinesthetic

Jason Isaacs’ villain in The Patriot (2000) was written with no redemption on purpose. Isaacs reportedly pushed for the character to be irredeemable, drawing on real documented wartime atrocities rather than movie villain theatrics.
