Milgram experiment set up a minimal condition that showed human barbarity: "All I have to do is tell people to do it." Stanford prison experiment set up a minimal condition: "All I have to do is sort people." Then Twitter said: "Hold my beer. All I need to do is let them talk."

@oecolamp I respect your point, but it's not for the same good. They can make Welsh rarebit more cheaply than I can make Welsh rarebit, but the idea is that that I should be eating peanut butter and jelly and not Welsh rarebit.

It's honestly a massive market failure if a person producing their own food at home can achieve a lower marginal cost than a competative market of firms solely dedicated to producing hot meals. Can't understand why you would support free markets if they can't even deliver lunch.

@catchvartan @DKThomp They can. But this Trump administration fired tens of thousands of government employees and replaced them with vetted sycophants who will do their bidding. Basically replaced "the deep state" with their own. That will take a concerted effort to undo

Within one 24 hour period, Trump: - got out of a $100 million IRS fine - secured "immunity" from all future tax investigations for his family and friends - created a $1.8 billion slush fund for lawbreaking supporters - was reported for likely insider trading worth nearly $1 billion All of the obvious things to say about this are true. It's bad. Nobody even tries to defend it. The closest thing to a defense you get is something about how "but Democrats suck" and "woke was also bad," which is not a defense, but rather a kind of moral blank check made out to the administration to give them the right to do anything. But what I'm most curious about is whether this sort of lurid corruption creates a countermovement that successfully returns government to rule of law or whether it's establishing a norm of executive imperialism that every future administration will use to achieve its ends, which can always be justified by the moral blank check of "the other side is worse, so let us do whatever we want."

@dollarsanddata Then why not FFS conclude that O'Leary is making this bullshit up rather than that he's aware of some trove of financially irresponsible kids. We practice epistemic worship of the wealthy and never pass up a chance to piss on the kids.

@scottlincicome We spend less on food than we ever did that before. But don't let that get in the way of making up something (who is spending $28 a day on lunch?) to shame the kids.

@KulakMAGAMan @HistoryBoomer I get it that you think people should abandon their families and communities to live in BFE. For the rest of us adults, there is a housing problem.

Most of the Country doesn't live in high cost of living California. California is experiencing a net outflow of people and has been for some time, pre-COVID too. Though it's fun seeing Californians realize: East of the Rockies is hot and humid, so evaporative cooling doesn't work, and Interstates are just a number, not "The Number"

@RickU @HistoryBoomer The overall median home sale price in San Diego County is approximately $916,000. If I save $10 a day for 49 years, I could afford the down payment!

@HistoryBoomer That's not an insignificant sum. A few years of that and you have a nice down payment - particularly if you're dropping it into an index fund

@KulakMAGAMan @HistoryBoomer The overall median home sale price in Los Angeles County is approximately $845,000. It's where I grew up. Twice as many people live in LA County and SD County as in all of Tennessee. Where people actually live and need houses, it's expensive.

@catchvartan @HistoryBoomer San Diego is exceptional - One of the most expensive cities in the US. The average US home price is in the mid $300k $250k in Ohio, $300k in Tennessee. And those prices will collapse or freeze in the next 10-20 years due to unavoidable demographics.

@HistoryBoomer I hope you mean *save* $10 a day on food, because I wasn't able to *spend* $10 a day on food in a reasonable way in 1998, let alone now.

"$28 for lunch daily isn't going to get me into a house or a new car" Actually, it kinda will. That's about $150/week, $600/month, $7200 a year. If you make $72k/year, that's 10% of your gross income. $7200 saved in a big chunk of downpayment on a new car. Saved for 5 years and compounded in an IRA it's a 20% downpayment on a $300k house (it's tax penalty free to withdraw for downpayment on 1st house!)

@paulswaney3 @bariweiss Shouldn't have been a "do you". Just a sentence. Trying to paraphrase your point of view. I'm not a lawyer either so we're not going to get tripped up in legal-ese.

No, you're absolutely fine. Just to make sure I understand you, do you think there should be one country Israel from the Mediterranean to the Jordan Sea and the 4 million or so Palestinians in the West Bank should be integrated into it, over a certain span of time (say 10 years), with full voting rights, same rights and political representation as all present-day Israeli citizens.

I can't stay silent anymore. I can't hint around the edges. The antisemitism has to end. I was raised Christian. I also carry some Ashkenazi blood. So this is personal on more than one level. I'll own my worst take of the last decade: I said @bariweiss's book "How to Fight Antisemitism" was unnecessary. I was wrong. Embarrassingly wrong. The receipts are everywhere now. Dave Smith and Darryl Cooper are grifters. They found a market opportunity in Jew-hatred and they are cashing in on it. That's the whole game. October 7th was not a genocide. Calling it one is an insult to the Rwandans, the Armenians, the Cambodians, the Bosnians, the Yazidis, and the Uyghurs. Words mean things. Use them correctly. The history is not complicated. Bill Clinton put a two-state solution on a silver platter. Arafat said no. The Hamas charter calls for the death of every Jew on earth. That is not a negotiating position. That is eliminationism. To my Western Muslim brothers and sisters, including some of the best business partners I've ever had: I know this isn't you. I'm not talking to you. I'm talking about the people who hide behind faith to push something you'd never endorse. Sharia law is not coming to the greatest country on earth. Not on my watch. I stand with Israel. עם ישראל חי

@paulswaney3 Paul, Boomers made a lot of mistakes but their 3 biggest are: 1) Not supporting David Duke when they had a chance 2) Believing the lies on the electronic jew about diversity 3) Believing the anti-"Nazi", holocaust lie. These mistakes have been profoundly bad for our nation.
