In its own way, it’s kind of impressive that the US is the most prosperous country in the world when we are putting up numbers like this

@SebastianCaliri Single-payer will never work in the US. To do so, each citizen will have to pay much higher taxes to essentially help their neighbor. I don’t see that happening.

Single-payer is not some untested theory. We have plenty of data from Canada. It is a great solution if you want to wait 28.6 weeks (~6.6 months) for an MRI or knee replacement. Pretending there is no trade off between cost control and timely access to care is unserious. Single payer can bound costs, but we cannot somehow spend less and receive the same thing in return.

We need single-payer health care. I've looked at the numbers, and there's no other way to bring costs down.

@amredman @BoomerDivvies I’ve seen waste in private companies you wouldn’t believe. I saw a $100 million project cancelled near completion because it sent mixed marketing signals with a similar product. I worked on a $10 billion project that was cancelled because of opportunity cost.

@cdglove98 @BoomerDivvies We'll have to agree to disagree. Public and private sector waste are two entirely different animals. There is significantly less accountability on the public side.

What's an acceptable top income tax rate? What % do YOU think it's okay to make people pay? The top tax rate in B.C. (my rate) is 53.5% 🤯 And even worse, this rate kicks in at only $265,545 which is not very high. After that our govt takes more than half of every dollar.

@amredman @BoomerDivvies Anyone who’s worked in a senior or management position in a large corporation knows that government waste is comparatively small, it’s just more visible because it’s public.

Personally, I think the top income tax rate should be a lot lower, and kick in at much higher rates. Maybe 30% @ $500k+ Capital Gains inclusion rate of 50% sounds fine from there. - No AMT - No TOSI Yes, this means less revenue for the government. There is such an incredible amount of waste. I really think we need some sort of Doge style initiative to clean that up. But I know that's a politically impossible stance.

Why is it so many Scots actually believe that our economy being half the size of Norway's and Denmark's is entirely acceptable and will continue to vote for the Unionist parties that made it happen?

@CreativeDeduct @DickWinchester Definitely data, but it needs to be corrected. I’ve already explained how GDP numbers are flawed when it comes to the US. So deduct roughly 30% and see where the UK lands then.

@cdglove98 @DickWinchester So what would your answer be if you were asked how you’d assess if Britain is richer or poorer than Florida? Would you use data? Or tell a story about what the two places look like?

@CreativeDeduct @DickWinchester I lived and worked in the US for 6 years. Whenever I’d visit Canada or the UK from there, everything was just a little bit nicer. It’s instantly noticeable. Yet by GDP metrics both countries are significantly poorer. It doesn’t add up.

@CreativeDeduct @DickWinchester But it’s possible to make the numbers look that way because US GDP is inflated by about 30% due to peculiarities in their economy; mostly FX and B2B spending distortions.

@malcolm_reavell @DavidMcNab17 @timleunig @meadwaj That’s workable, but same problem: highly skilled, highly paid roles that are an export will just be moved overseas. Maybe that sector is small enough that for the overall sake of society it’s a net benefit, but I doubt it.

@malcolm_reavell @timleunig @meadwaj That’s a different matter, that I get, but high skilled labour that’s effectively an export and exists here primarily because of the talent pool might find that talent pool is smaller because talented people will follow the money elsewhere.
