@minervas_muse I don't think A Study in Scarlet was serialised, although The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Valley of Fear were later; it occupied 95 pages of the 1887 issue of a magazine which was published annually.

@baseballcrank That is what you say if you do Latin now, but you learned Latin in an English-speaking country 180 years ago you learned to say it with a J—the medical and legal professions usually preserve this older tradition of pronunciation in the face of reforms in the Latin classroom.

Is "jus" pronounced with a j, or like "yoos"? I assume the latter, if you do Latin. Gorsuch pronounces the former, Barrett the latter.

Roberts sounds unconvinced, unsurprisingly: "not sure how you get" from a few "quirky" exceptions to birthright citizenship (eg, children of ambassadors) to "big group" of U.S.-resident illegal aliens.

@SyrusEphrem @FrLavery @DimondCultWatch All heretics charge Rome with doctrinal corruption. The magisterium must be the judge of such controversies. To claim the prerogative of privately judging them with such certainty that you may repudiate the successors of the Apostles for disagreeing with you is Protestantism.

I still disagree with Sedevacantism entirely, but I have way more respect for Cassicum Thesis Sedes than I do Totalist Sedes. Cassicum Thesis Sedes have a rational solution to the current crisis in Rome. Totalist Sedes have no solution other than hypothetical 1/2

@FrLavery @DimondCultWatch You do not preserve traditional theology because the traditional theologians teach that there must be a pope continuously and always until the end of the world; even if you could now obtain a pope, there would not be any continuity with Pius XII. The line would be interrupted.

On the contrary, our position is the only one that involves strictly the use of long-accepted theology, without the need to invent completely novel theories that have never been taught in the Church. The Thesis involves many absurdities including a monster church in which the legal church is somehow different from the real Church or Mystical Body of Christ. There is nothing to respect in the Thesis.

@MaddyStrong3 @FrankLRizzo @TomorrowsWar Are you serious? There is nothing lacking in the suffering of Christ. He bore the full weight of the wrath of God on the sin of His people? What could we possibly make up for in that? Your question is at least approaching blasphemy.

@drphilipdixon @StMichael71 It wasn't a begrudging concession, either—as soon as he understood what I was asking, he outright insisted on it, as if he thought it was obvious that pure preaching of the word of God and right administration of the sacraments was all that was necessary for Catholicity.

@drphilipdixon @StMichael71 When I put the case to him, a spokesman for the SSPX told me that an Anglo-Papalist parish with a validly ordained priest which confessed all Catholic doctrine and used the Tridentine liturgy, yet was in communion with Canterbury and not Rome, would be as Catholic as they are.

@RangerDave2001 @OrinKerr Why couldn't the police search all they want? It is as if he ordered CSAM by postcard. Since he knew he was sending unencrypted Internet traffic through a connection whose owner could monitor it, there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.

@OrinKerr Would this not also violate the 4th Amendment since the restaurant was acting as an agent of the police, at least with respect to whatever they found after the police asked the restaurant to monitor him for them?

Person uses unencrypted wifi (no password) of nearby restaurant to download CSAM. Restaurant notices, alerts cops, logs future downloads. Oregon SCT: Restaurant's monitoring violated the Oregon state constitution, which is broader than federal 4th Am. storage.courtlistener.com/pdf/2026/03/26… #N

@Gregory209396 I’m sorry, what part of my post are you disagreeing with? You’re asking completely separate question. Even if I granted BOD/Blood, which I’m not that does not apply to infants at all. What theologian taught otherwise?

LIMBO of the Infants Thread 1/8 In Catholic doctrine, unbaptized infants who die go to the Limbo of the Innocents. Not a place of torment, but perfect natural happiness yet deprived forever of the Beatific Vision. This upholds three infallible truths at once…
