Secretary Marco Rubio
I am pleased to announce the release of American journalist Shelly Kittleson, who was recently kidnapped by members of the foreign terrorist organization Kata’ib Hizballah near Baghdad, Iraq.   The U.S. Department of State extends its appreciation to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of War, U.S. personnel across multiple agencies, and the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council and our Iraqi partners, for their assistance in securing her release.   This resolution reflects the Trump Administration's steadfast commitment  to the safety and security of American citizens, no matter where they are in the world.   Under President Trump, the wrongful detention or kidnapping of U.S. nationals will not be tolerated. We will continue to use every tool to bring Americans home and to hold accountable those responsible.   We are relieved that this American is now free and are working to support her safe departure from Iraq.

Shelly Kittleson, the American journalist who was kidnapped in Baghdad, is a disciplined reporter and vigilant about her safety. But the risks to her, as for most journalists in the region, are part of the ecosystem. Read Kiran Nazish. cjr.org/analysis/shell…

CPJ MENA
CPJ MENA@CPJMENA·
#Iraq: CPJ is deeply concerned by reports that American freelance journalist #Shelley_Kittleson was abducted by unidentified individuals in Baghdad on Tuesday. According to Iraq’s Interior Ministry, security forces launched an immediate operation based on precise intelligence and have intercepted a vehicle believed to be linked to the perpetrators. However, Kittleson was not found in the vehicle. Local reports indicate she was taken near the Baghdad Hotel on Saadoun Street. CPJ calls on Iraqi authorities to do everything in their power to locate Shelley Kittleson, ensure her immediate and safe release, and hold those responsible to account.

CFWIJ and Women Press Freedom stands in solidarity with journalist Javeria Siddiqui, widow of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, who was killed in Kenya in 2022. More than three years later, justice remains elusive, while Javeria reports escalating harassment, intimidation, and surveillance in Pakistan. A Pakistani fact-finding team concluded that Arshad Sharif’s killing was pre-planned, and the Kenyan High Court declared it unlawful, yet no one has been held accountable. We call on authorities to ensure her safety, end the harassment, and deliver justice. No journalist or family member should live in fear for demanding accountability. [Javeria Siddiqui, Arshad Sharif, justice, press freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, free speech, protect journalists, end impunity, Pakistan, journalist, women journalists, women in journalism, CFWIJ, Women Press Freedom] @CFWIJ @javerias

It's been 3 years snd 3 months since I lost my brave investigative journalist husband, Arshad Sharif, and I'm still fighting for justice in Pakistan and Kenya. As a journalist, it's not easy to keep going without spouse, facing harassment and in battle for justice, but I'm grateful for the unwavering support of my country fellows, local journalists unions, lawyers, social media users and international media community. Special thanks to PFUJ and RIUJ for standing with me, and a big thank you to IFJ for awarding me the International Press Card (IPC) on your 100-year celebration. I'm proud to be a journalist, activist, and unionist, and I'll continue to play my role in promoting press freedom and seeking justice. #JusticeForArshadSharif @IFJGlobal @ifjasiapacific @abellanger49
